Bike Lock Chain Length

Hey there. I am going to buy one of the Kryptonite locks with a chain, probably the Kryptonite New York Bike Chain and Evolution4 Disc Lock but I wnated to see what size chaine people recommended for making the most secure arrangement. Does having 2 extra feet of chain (which means several more pounds) make the 5' chain worth it?

Thanks,
Serge

I'm a pretty big guy, and as a result, I have a big bike (Jamis Dakar XLT, 21" frame); I've never been in a spot where I couldn't lock up with 40-48" of chain.

In other words, 3-1/2 or 4 feet of chain is good for most places; more is just dead weight.

My chain is 36", and I usually have extra left over.

I've wondered whether it would work to use the chain as you would a U lock -- that is, have the chain be only about 16 inches long. That would save a lot of weight.
