I think i've spotted my stolen bike on ebay....

So i couple of weeks ago my bike got stolen in new york, i was VERY attached to this bike, i loved it dearly - i'd ridden it across america on the transamerican trail/the western express/ the pacific coast trail of adventurecycling's maps... so yeah... we had some times together that i will never forget and i was seriously broken apart when it got stolen...

Anyway... so, 6 weeks later and THIS shows up on ebay...

    The reasons i'm suspsicious:

My bike was a 2005 bianchi volpe, as far as i know they haven't updated the design - what the HELL is this design??!!! No bianchi bike i know of......
It's clearly been resprayed and has standard stickers on it and racing stripes, again, very unbianchi
Been sanded down but still has some dings in it, i don't remember any specific dings in my frame unfortunately
If anyone recognises this frame please let me know, i've never seen this design before...
The bianchi crest is no longer there and has been replaced with a sticker
There appears to be no serial number on the bottom of the frame like there would normally be

WHAT CAN I DO!?? It seems like i have nothing to prove this is my bike, but at the same time there is a lot to prove this bike has been screwed with? The volpe is a pretty rare frame, especially in NY.....

Am i being totally paranoid and dreaming of times past with my bike???!!!

I reported my bike stolen the day after to the police, i just don't know what i can do if, indeed, this is my frame... help??!!!

From your description, it's possible, but doesn't seem especially probable that this is your bike.

I do note the person has 100% positive feedback but also states "the frameset is brand new ,never ridden." You'd think if he was palming a bunch of old used stuff off as new, feedback would suffer.
"be careful this rando stuff is addictive and dan's the 'pusher'."

    Sorry about your loss.

The Volpe on ebay looks like an '08 Volpe to me. See http://bianchiusa.com/08_volpe.html. The color is a little off, but that might just be the lighting.

I'll agree it *looks* like the 08, but closeups of the ebay listing sure look like a repaint to me. If the frame is essentially the same, repaint and re-decal to a current scheme would be easier and would mask the fact it was an older bike.

That said, only a serial # would tell for sure, all else is speculation.

Not that it doesn't happen. Had a friend get a custom carbon fiber hood (car) stolen. Several weeks later it popped up on eBay. I bought it and we had the police there when we took delivery. *That* was one fun day.

If the bike is going for ~100, wouldn't it be more expensive to repaint/redecal than it's selling for?

EDIT: no chance to meet up, inspect the bike, and have an undercover cop tail you or something?

If you think cops are going to give a **** for a case worth $100, you might want to reconsider.

Have you considered asking the seller for the serial number?

That's not how ebay works. If an item is going for $100 with several days left on the auction it will almost certainly sell for significantly more than that in the end.
