Perhaps in another 10 years or so he'll be allowed to go to the beach, and then when he hits 30, he can date.

If you do have kids - more power to you for raising such independent kids that you no longer supervise at all what they read, watch, or do when they're 13 (but don't be surprised if their judgement sometimes lapses and creates problems you might have helped prevent if you were less hands-off).

Gwhunt - I've never read dirt-rag, but I'm sure there's far more good stuff in there than bad. I'd suggest you offer to let your parents preview it before you read it. That will give them a chance to discuss why they disagree with anything in the magazine, or to simply tear out any pages they really don't like, which will probably be less than one per issue. It won't take long before they stop worrying about the magazine. Your parents might debate whether or not you're mature to be exposed to risque images, but you're definitely mature enough to discuss issues with your parents and reach a compromise.
For everyone else - Come on guys, remember being in the teens? Heck, what about now? I doubt are you going to tell me that showing that much skin doesn't inspire any thoughts about sex. Most of you have already suggested so.
Ggwhunt's parents obviously have a particular view about the place of sex in this world, and are trying to lead him to the same type of view. Without being really philosophical, the practice of displaying and viewing images that arouse thoughts of sex conflicts with the view of sex as being being properly shared exclusively and privately by a couple. I know that's not really the popular view of sex lately, but that's another argument. The 2 main point are, it doesn't aid him in leading a chaste life and the point Allen H already made about it being his parents' decision.

Your folks are the boss of you until you're old enough to be on your own.
That being said, they sound awfully prudish. There's nothing wrong with the human body. Even less wrong with that particular body.
You sound like a reasonable kid, and I'm sure you could find much more skin on TV alone. The folks might not have a particularly enlightended view about the body and sex, their actions show that they may have more problems on this subject than you ever will. Try to cut them some slack and remember you won't have long until you can make these decisions for yourself.
Maybe you could talk your local library into subscribing.
FWIW, I am a parent, of a nine year old girl and six year old boy. We're not particularly hung up on nekkid bodies, they've seen nudity (real people, museums, etc), though we're not nudists. Something like this mag cover might be a lesson for them, on the nature of sex and advertising. How to recognize it and to try seeing past it.

I have 4 children, 12-20, Our family was never "hung up on sex". Heck try growing up on a farm and not knowing about sex!
I think that you should know that your parents are just doing what they think is the right thing. Most of us parents do this, or we wouldn't be very good parents, and do it out of love. Hang in there, love'em back, and ride. You'll be 40 before you know it!

Sorry kiddo but it sounds like your parents are some very narrow minded folks. I just pray they don't vote.

"Sure, the subject just happens to be Christina Begy's legs wrapped around a hand crafted Spot singlespeed frame."

It is possible that the young man's parents responded out of a narrow religious conservatism desire to "protect" him from being corrupted by sexuality.
However, it also may be possible that they responded out of a disgust for the tendency of our culture to only value women for their bodies as sexual objects. It is a sad state of affairs that women receive equal or greater pay than men only in the job categories of modelling and pornography. This does beg the question of why the accomplishments of this successful bicycle competator are framed by a cover focusing on her legs portrayed sexually straddling the bike?

Yo
I won't let my kids read the rag.
Not because of seeing nekkid legs, I'm afraid they will stop eating meat and become pacifists.

Let's not forget the old Marla Streb pictures from Outside Magazine. Or the Corinne Dorland ad in that dutch magazine. Those seemed much more risque... not that I'm personally complaining.
