What about THIS????

I think it would be cool for exercise--that is, doing short laps, and not going far from home.
However,,,,
it looks somewhat on the small side for me and I would not buy one without a test-ride. And as it happens I've never seen one IRL anywhere.

Wtf

JanMM 08-22-08 08:09 PM

Didn't Lance win a stage of his final TDF on a Rowbike?

yardmutt 08-22-08 09:58 PM

That looks like work.

I've seen one being used on the Huntington Beach bike path. Lady rider said she just used it for a general workout. She rode a normal bike out on the streets. The path was crowded so she could not have gone much more then 10 MPH if she tried.

Gimmick. Like a little thing called MICROSOFT!

geo8rge 08-23-08 12:46 PM

As an owner:
1) It is a better work out than a stationary rowing machine. It is not a repacement for a bicycle, or a gimmick. Compare it to excercise equipment not transportation equipment.

2) It requires more maintenance than a stationanry rowing machine. For example the rollers under the seat need to replaced often, in addition to the usual bicycle stuff.

After 2 yrs of regular use I have no trouble with hills and can even do 30 mi runs.

It has gears breaks and steering. It takes time to learn to ride safely and effectively. It does not take tremendous strength, but at the start you should take it easy to avoid irritating tendons, joints.

This looks more appealing to me

Nyce bump. :p

Believe it or not, people ride Elliptigos on Ragbrai every year. I've also wished for a land-rowing machine ever since seeing this picture of Ashrita Furman on one:

Seems like a great way to get around, really. :thumb:

And then there's an Irish Mail. It's an old concept. Think of a row bike with 4 wheels, which is steered with the rider's feet. Here is the manufacture of the modern version.

It's not a substitute for a bike, it supplements a bicycle workout.

What happens if you accidentally lose your grip on the handle bars?

??? They both have two wheels and humans ride them, but that's about the extent of the similarity.

in how absurdly stupid it is / how absurdly stupid you look using it.

fietsbob 10-25-13 12:51 PM

Used one is on consignment at the LBS.. Owner a Coastie helo pilot.

I thought it needed a Dinghy around it ,
but to be authentic you have to be facing backwards..

its a Canoe and Kayak that you face the course to be taken..

fietsbob 10-25-13 12:53 PM

Jeff , the guy in the back is the Tail-gunner? that will get that 3 feet passing clearance

sorry Jeff Wont sign up, yet again someplace else, to see your referred to picture .
you might put it in the post .
[but it really doesn't matter that much]

I think "tailgunner" is reserved for the second stoker on a Bilenky/Counterpoint trio:

~0:43 - "I absolutely fell in love with it because it's the closest thing to running that you can do outside"

Did she really just say that or are my ears not working right? Because that seems like a weird thing to say.

BlazingPedals 10-26-13 09:37 AM

Aw heck, as long as we've resurrected the thread and are having fun:

I feel like a luddite, and a boring one at that, riding traditional recumbent bicycles.
Treadmill Bike sparks my interest a little, though.

tcarl 10-28-13 06:13 PM

I rode once with someone on a Row Bike. I noticed two things. It wasn't very steady - speed up, slow down with each "row". Second, he was incredibly fast using the strength of both arms and legs and a lower wind profile (he was also young and athletic).

Regarding the Elliptigo, that looks like a great way to maximize wind resistance, just the opposite of what most of us want to do.
