Change in one year's time at the college I go to

A year ago, I remember the first day of classes at the university I go to. The bike racks has 3-4 bikes on them at most. All of them were dedicated bicyclists, part of the cycling organization.

Last Monday, things were totally different. The bike racks are not just full, but beyond capacity where people have bikes leaning on a nearby wall, but tethered to the rack by multiple cable locks chained together. The dedicated road bikes are now drowned out by X-Mart specials, cruisers, and low end mountain bikes, apparently rescued from a garage.

I knew more people were riding, but this is almost a 1000% increase in the number of bikes I'm seeing.

My college starts classes on Thursday. I should bring my camera... when I went up on Wednesday to get my books and rent a locker, all of the bike lockers (like little sheds for individual bikes) were rented already, with a waiting list of 25+ people, and there were already a fair number of bikes on the outside racks.

Many colleges are giving away bikes with a promise from the students that they will no longer bring their car on to campus.

The number of fixed and SS riders around here have been astounding. There were two of them four years ago (to the point where I recognizes the bikes and their riders) and now there are at least 200, with some of them clearly not knowing what they were doing (the obviously eeeek I tried to coast and I feel like a rider getting bucked off a horse look).

Oh my gosh !! Do you see what's happening? We're becoming like China and China is trying to become like us.

Write a college paper on that!

...by parking it at home and riding something that you don't mind suffering the inevitable rack rash.

Isn't that ironic? China wants to be like us, big house, big cars. Except now we're going back to green, less cars, more bikes..... The Chinese must be confused as hell!
