There are things that impede your progress on the bike path, such as walkers and dogs, but at least it's a bike path of considerable length.

knowing flat Florida and very few few elevation changes I should be a fair comparison.

my 20 mile average is 19.5-20.5 mph on a flat 20 mile course.

im 20 years old been riding for a month.

About 17 when on an unrestricted wide path with hills. About 13 for my commute. This is what the computers on the bikes tell me.

When you post in a web forum, people respond, noobsauce. Shall I explain the difference between a response...like I provided, and flame bait, like you provided...or do you need pictures to go with it?

If you weren't such a noob you might understand that if one wants to measure themselves against others, doing so in direct competition...a race...is much more accurate and informative than using something as inaccurate and fraught with variables as 'average speed'.

But of course we could do it your way. I averaged 20mph over 160miles. I must be a CYCLING GOD! (or perhaps just had a great tailwind).

On the contrary, I feel your posts are flame bait, and I simply question it. You come off as bitter and judgmental, but then again, it is simply a webforum, so I guess its just as acceptable to vent your general frustrations.

Also, at "noob." I love e-high school.

This question is sorely going to advertise my severe mathematical weakness.... What if you just took your first ride on your brand new bike, no lights, it's almost dark and you didn't want to take the time yet to put your comp. on, I know I rode 12 miles (took a common route) and it took me 40 minutes. This is about 30 minutes less than what it had been taking me to ride the exact same route on the OLD WAGON of a bike I was on...

so what was my avg. speed?

yeah, duh in Katy, TX

18mph.

12 (miles) divided by 40 (mins) times 60 (1 hour) = 18 mph

(Average speed) = (distance traveled) / (elapsed time)

To get average speed in mph, you need to convert elapsed time from minutes to hours:

40 minutes * (1 hour / 60 minutes) = 0.667 hours.

So your average speed was

(average speed) = (12 miles) / (0.667 hours) = 18 mph.

You said on the "old wagon" you need an additional thirty minutes. That's 70 minutes, which is 1.167 hours. So your average speed on that bike was

(average speed) = (12 miles) / (1.167 hours) = 10.3 mph.

I dont think average speed means much. I do my 13.8 mile commute in eerierly consistant 60 mins. I go days each way that are within 30 seconds of 1 hour. Thing is some days I sit in traffic for a while, often I get stuck at even more lights than usual. Some mornings I leave so early no cars are out I barely slow down at some stop signs that I always stop at when there is any traffic. All the stops seem to average out my speed, in other words, if I go faster I stop more.

Well if you weren't a noob, you'd know that it's usually best to spend some time lurking in internet forums, newsgroups and the like, to get a taste of the flavor, style and existing members. But you felt the need to spout off, so if it quacks like a noob, it must be a noob, noob.

If you don't like what I say, they got this cute little ignore thingie you can use too, since you obviously ain't figured that out yet either.

Dude that is an amazing improvement from just a change in bike...are you sure there are not some other factors that were different?

18 mph.

1.5 * 40 = 60 min, 1.5 * 12 = 18 is how I figured it. Luckily I didn't have to convert to metric hours.

Y'all are weenies. My average speed when I'm on a bike is around 1.2 million miles per hour. That figure is true even uphill in strong headwinds.

However, it does take into account earth rotation, movement around the sun, and the swing of our arm of stars around the center of our galaxy.

Yea--but even then, you'd only know how you did against the other people in the same race.

My average speed is however long it takes me to get there...and back. Too many variables and bars to make it consistent

Here is my average speed since I started riding earlier this year. These measurements were taken on a set 40km route I ride fairly regularly. Sometimes I ride hard and sometimes I go easy. I'm happy that my speed, for a given heart rate, has steadily increased over the season.

Average speed is useful for monitoring personal performance but unless you're riding on my route with the same wind and terrain my data probably won't be of much value but you asked.
