80 kph (50mph) flat rear tyre today...

Now that was scary...

riding a nice long downhill stretch at about 80 (50mph) and theres a funny noise, all happened in about 30 seconds. clunk clunk clunk, wondered where it was coming from, stopped pedalling, no not bottom bracket, clunk clunk, then HISSS, (rapid deflation) then flub flub flub noise as I try to pull up safely.

What a rush.. but something I don't really want to repeat.

Thought I'd be fine with my Armadillo's, searched all over.. no puncture. Pulled the tyre off and theres a hole in the rim side of the tube. No damage to the tape, no spoke sticking through. Anyway fixed it and made the 20km ride home on a half inflated tyre, got to get me one of those CO2 inflaters!

Took it to my LBS and yep, faulty tube. They replaced it no charge and trued the rim (it took a little beating). I'll keep going back there, bought a new tube so if anything nasty happens again I wont have to use the repair kit. Next LBS stop is a CO2 inflater (when I get the ok to spend 'more money' on my habit)

Skip the CO2, get a Topeak Road Morph.

Nice looking pump but it's about 8 - 10 times the size of a CO2.

Just hang it from your top tube?

EDIT: Also, it;s like 2-3 times the size of a CO2 pump, and it doesn't require spare cartridges.

Yikes!!

Thankfully it wasn't the front!
Man, if that happened to me where I hit that speed, I'd be surrounded by heavy traffic.

It is funny, I have ridden a motorcycle for 23 years and have never had a flat, I never even think about it. But on the bicycle, I think it about all the time, I'm afraid to really let go down hill because of it! I'm glad everything turned out good for you!
But, now I have more to think about...

Have had a sore neck for the past 3 days, guess I was looking down at the back wheel and the bb when it happened and brought my head up real quick (to see where I was hopefully not going to crash!).

Guess the adrenaline rush hid any initial pain and damage, only for it to surface a couple of days later and it seems like I gave myself whiplash. So no riding till I can move my head around properly.

Still got out of it lightly, the road isn't heavy traffic, about 8km (5Mi) through bushland, it was early so beating the rush of whatever traffic there is... and it wasn't the front... and I stayed on and live to tell the tale.

not in any great hurry to do it again though (flat tyre that is, I will still be doing the fast downhill)
