If this is what you are talking about then yes, they are reputable. They make what some consider to be the best and most concise bike maintenance book/manual and I think they are owned/operated by Rodale which does a ton of others things including Men's Health, Runner's World, Organic Gardening, etc.

I've had a subscription and my friend has one now and we've had no problems. Yes, it is once a month, but I think they short you one month or something since it says 11 issues/year.

I discontinued it because I got tired of looking at beautiful bikes that I would never shell out the cash for... plus, most of the decent stuff is online a month later anyways...

I subscribe and they do have some interesting articles but there isn't a lot of quality opinion in it. The reviews are usually only of dream bikes and are regurgitated spec sheets with comments like, "Shifts smoothly," or "is vertically compliant while laterally stiff," etc. It has far too many articles promising easy speed in very short amounts of time, kind of like miracle diets.

They have 11 issues per year, which means they don't always come on, say, the 6th of the month and it makes me anxiously waiting sometimes.

I don't think I'll renew my subscription.

Before subscribing, try this test.

Go to the local bookstore like Barnes & Noble and read the mag to your hearts content. Do this for a couple or 3 months. Then tell yourself if you really like it that much.

Also, ask yourself if there's ever a bad review. At least here, we have advertisement banners like what you see on the far right but we say what we want about a product or service.

I have cycled "seriously" for more than twenty years and have subscribed for as long. I have to say that according to the mag there are only good products out there. They periodically have the next great ride idea, century idea, diet idea, making time to ride idea and very occasionally discuss touring (my interest). All this, yet I keep renewing - like many magazines, a pleasant read before bed, or when you'd like something light and fluffy.

Now that I more regularly read BF, possibly I'll drop the mag. But not for now.

I dumped my subscription long ago because I got bored with ultimate this and ultimate that. I'm just not an ultimate kind of guy, being a 'bent rider and all. There's nothing in it for someone who really likes an EZ Sport, that's for sure. bk

Bicycling comes out once a month. The news stand on sale dates for the fall/winter are 8/5, 9/9, 10/7, 11/4, and 12/9. Subscription copies should be mailed a little earlier than these dates.

I feel that much of what they cover in the articles and product reviews is heavily swayed by their advertisers and I would not consider it to be an objective source for information relating to bikes/accessories. For free I read it every month but I'm not sure I'd pay to subscribe.

I work in the magazine industry.

Concur.
I've recieved the magazine as a benefit of Performance Bike's "Team Performance" for a few years now. As with others (even this post), just take it w/ a grain of salt.

Fred Delong died in 1995 or 96

Other Bicycling! magazine alumni from the days when they actually wrote about and rode bicycles:

Fred Berto is in Ca and writing books

A couple of years ago Fred Matheny passed me so fast on a steep climb in Vermont I thought I was rolling backwards.

Ed Pavelka along with Fred Matheny started an online Magazine a few years ago ; http://www.roadbikerider.com

I almost forgot Jim Langley who is still writing and has a very good blog http://www.jimlangley.blogspot.com/

Its a good magazine if you want to see what is the latest and greatest. I have a sub to it for light reading before I go to bed myself.
