Anybody know how to make decals?
I'm spray painting an old Shogun frame and would like to make some decals for it. I've got some good graphics software but need a few tips on such things as what kind of paper to print the decals on? Where do you get that type of paper? Can you use a laser printer? Would Kinko's do this kind of job? And finally, dimensions and sizes for the top tube and down tube. thanks!
The Improbable Bulk
There is special paper for decals. Search google for a plethora of choices. I believe they are mostly inkjet, and that would seem like the reasonable choice. I don't know whether laser would add value to the process, I would use inkjet if I were print my own decals.
Are you looking to recreate the original decals, or just create some of your own design? If your own design, you can measure with a tape measure and figure out what size seems best to you. If you are looking to recreate the originals, you need to let people know what model and year your bike is. Then someone with the right model can take measurements. Also, the proper decals, or a copy of them, may be available from people who create decals.
In the past I've used a local sign company that laser cuts vinyl stick ons. They have a lot of stock fonts and colors, can make them any size you want and can scan a custom logo for you.
For my next project I'm going to have them make some temporary vinyl stick ons, that have a lower tack adhesive. I'm going to use them to mask off my down tube lettering.
