Wear your gloves!
I really need to invest in some bike gloves soon...
Had a minor yet nasty spill today. Was out for a short ride and trying out my new helmet when I pulled off to the side of a road at a rest stop embankment. I was on my fixed gear and had my clips pulled fairly tight, and I neglected to get my feet out before I came to a stop and ended up falling over, landing on the chat gravel with my left palm, which ended up skinning about a square inch of skin off of my palm. There was lots of blood, and luckily the spot just felt numb for awhile until I got home. I'm also glad I was so close to home and my brother came to pick me up in my car.
If I were wearing gloves my hand would be in much better shape!

I last crashed in October of 2007 when I hit a rut in the road. I was down in a flash. I was wearing gloves and my hands were not tore up from the asphalt but my gloves were ruined. I bought some new ones the next day.

Even my cloth palmed gloves made a nasty pea-gravel-turn wipeout much less hard on the hand, than it might have been.

I tore up a tendon or ligament in the back of my right hand in a fall on a local MUP. Gloves would have prevented that painful and slow-to-heal damage as well.
If you are wearing gloves anyway, you should install a set of these:

I once melted a bit of my glove.

I crashed trying to clip in when the light turned green this morning (foot slipped off the pedal and I went right over.) Somehow I managed to scrape up the TOPS of both hands, and bent both brake levers. I still can't actually picture what happened. I had nice thick winter gloves on, but they're full of ragged holes on top now...

Well, they were when I did the melting. I reached down for a water bottle on a new bike and it wasn't where I expected it. I had grabbed the wheel by mistake instead. Oh, and yes, I crashed.

My favorite leather and mesh biking gloves are in tatters but I don't trust those new gel gloves so I bought weight trainer gloves instead. They don't have ventilation but they're all leather and protect my paws real good.

I've always looked at it like this:
Although we'd all prefer to never crash at all, if it's going to happen then having *something* covering your skin is better than having nothing. I use Mechanix gloves from the auto parts store. They are light and cheap and I don't know how well they'll protect me in a fall but they've got to be better than bare skin hitting the road.
You are correct that most gel gloves are designed to reduce road vibration to your hands while riding and not primarily as a crash safety device.
