This is the third story I've seen in four months about someone risking their life for a cell phone.

Don't people realize that cell phones are free?

This is NYC. I doubt that people are targeting cyclists in particular.

He valued his cell phone more than his bike. He should be shot. (just kidding)

He was afraid to give the phone up because he may need to contact someone????? Hey, genius, if you don't get shot, you don't need to call anyone.

Nokia should give him free cell phones and service for life and feature him in all of their TV spots. He could be their Jared :-)

I can just see the bumperstickers, the t-shirts and the belt-buckles now...

Ok, I live in New York City. This stuff isn't too uncommon so I can poke a little humor at this:

1) He was shot in the leg and then proceeded to CONTINUE arguing with the mugger.
2) THEN he was shot in the leg, "After he shot me in the arm, I started to run," Muchalski said. "Until the moment he shot me in my arm, I was sure it was just a toy."

So basically, he still thought the gun was a toy after he was shot in the leg the first time...
A nokia 3390 isn't worth the plastic it's made of. If anyone asked for my cellphone, I'll just pop the battery as I'm giving it to him, which would turn it off and password lock it. Then ride off and occasionally call the mugger at work to taunt him about not being to place outgoing calls on his stolen phone.

Okay... I just had to look up the Nokia 3390. I did recall it being an older model but yeesh... they give these phones away free when you purchase a pre-paid calling card! I think the mugger got the losing end of the trade as I'm sure the cost in bullets was more than what that phone was worth. Regardless, no item is worth a life especially your own.

what about the scum lurking around on the bridge?? granted, i don't think the victim was too smart... but the real idiot is that a** hole with the gun. i bike that bridge all the time, and this one sits a little too close to home.

there's something wrong with someone willing to put themselves at harm over a cell phone, but i think there's REALLY something wrong with someone willing to take a life over a cell phone. give the poor guy a break...

That's like saying "credit cards are free". It's not the phone, it's the thousands in charges that could be rung up before he could get it cancelled.

My respnse in that situation: "Here, take the phone. I've already hit the panic button, the police are tracking it via GPS. Have a good afternoon."
