you can find some that have small tabs to allow them to connect together side by side as well as stack. I have a bunch in my garage, even have a few that make up a camp kitchen.

I get mine just riding through the alleys. People throw them out after they've used
them for awhile. Dumpster diving will occasionally come up with one too. (And would
you believe there are people who think there's nothing to do in Calgary?)

They certainly are handy for storage.

Go to any university's dorms after everyone checks out for summer break.
Look in the dumpsters behind the dorms.
You can find many crates from disassembled "book shelf units" that were abandoned by the thieving students.
Many to choose from.
Therefore, you won't actually be stealing the crates - you'll be recycling them.
Everybody wins.

I have two old milk crates. One has a diagonal grid bottom & i only use it to store stuff when the other crate is strapped to bike. It also holds some other stuff all the time, like water bottles (full), and some bike related doo-dads.

Found them by dumpsters at nearby apartment complex on a tip from a client. Also found a wald wire front basket. Aparrently there were three, and i got there too late and only the two were left. Am on the lookout for a rectangular crate, as they are 1/3 larger.

Crates on bikes are very popular over here. I mounted one on my previous bike. Take a little time and research this.

What's very popular here is the crate that collapses. Most folks will have one in their car for grocery shopping. It's encouraged to bring your own shopping bags\crates\whatever over here when grocery shopping.

I've seen these and don't know why it didn't occur to me to get one for the rear rack.

I picked up a sturdy enough dark-grey crate from Walmart for $4 (not hard to find somewhere else if you can't stomach Walmart). I have access to milk crates, but this is slightly larger as well as lighter. I've carried about 30 lb of stuff in the crate just bungeed to my rear rack with no problem.

Go to a scrap metal yard. I throw away dozens of these a week.

the ones in the stores are lighter than the ones the dairy uses . they have trucks to drive theirs around.

My mom has a couple in her garage that my best friend and I "borrowed" from a local grocery store.....about 35 years ago. Store has since gone out of business, so I doubt she'll be returning them any time soon. I think those suckers could stand up to a nuclear bomb they're so thick, sturdy and heavy.

These COKE crates-will hold two grocery paper bags filled with groceries-small cargo net of course-and double the bags if possible
I had them on my motorcycles-and occasionally mount one on a bike
Or use them as cat sleeping platforms when 2 of the cats are crated at night

Just ask at a convenience story offer to pay "A coke crate would be worth $1 to me etc"
I never ask for something for nothing-why should they do that??
Cheap as I am-I try to buy that sort of thing

Yes, they do show up at second hand stores some times but those are still stolen from somewhere. If you happen to live near a plastics production plant, they do sell the defective ones - such as with a small area where the plastic did not reach. I have a few that were purchased in Wisconsin years ago and they are stamped with the name Dane Plastics (somewhere near Madison I presume) and do have the "don't steal these" warning on them but no dairy name. Mine are probably 25 years old and still usable so molded plastic crates are just fine. I only paid a dollar or two for them way back when.

Cheap way to carry stuff on your bike, just get a milk crate, bungie it to your rack and instant storage container. Some people even use them in place of panniers on a bike.

Problem with that is, you're not stealing them from the grocery store. You're stealing them from the dairy supplier.

I buy my milk crates from Milk Crates Direct these are the real deal. The only problem is the shipping can get steep. I have a couple of milk crates that actually have dates on them and are pushing 30 years old. Both are falling apart after too much UV exposure and general aging. I just ordered some replacements.

I as in Home Depot the other day and they were selling real milk crates for about $5/each. They also had some rectangular wooden crates that would work for some bike applications.

If you're looking for a crate to mount on your bike consider a folding crate. I mounted one on a previous bike.
