Going insane without my bike
 

I haven't been riding much lately because the rear wheel on my Trek 7.5 has been coming out of true every five minutes. I took it to the lbs again and this time they decided that the wheel needs to be rebuilt, which I figured would be the minimum requirement (might need to be replaced altogether). They aren't charging me for labor (just spokes), so at least it won't be expensive, but I'm slowly going insane. :twitchy:

And the lbs guys jokingly ask if I've been riding the bike at a skate park or doing bunny hops all over the place. I can only imagine what the wheel would look like if I actually did.

I just hope the wheel will last once it's rebuilt.

Was the wheel running good before? If so, what happened to make it start doing what it's doing now? Are the spokes loose?

I ordered parts for a drivetrain/wheel overhaul on wednesday morning (in some cases earlier).
My previous repair died due to a heavily worn freewheel on wednesday night.
I've been waiting since for parts.... would have had everything assembled by now, but one of the stores I ordered from decided to wait 8 days before shipping, then shipped via ground shipping.


I haven't been riding in more than a week and have been walking to class every day..... I'm going to love doing it on mostly new parts, but this ain't worth it :(

How old is the wheel. When I bought my touring bike, I did not go top of the line. I put my money into my race bike, instead. Sort of now, think that the reverse of my priorities.. Anyway, the Fuji I bought has a solid frame, but the components were on the cheap end..
I had a problem with repeatedly breaking spokes from almost day one.. The shop I bought the bike kindly replaced the spokes in both wheels for half price, plus the cost of the spokes..( Double butted, heavier gauge.) Afterwards , a much better ride..
Maybe you need follow my example. ?.. Another question.. Is the rim worth rebuilding. ?.
Going crazy w/o a bike. One can never have too many bikes. .. Two is a minimum needed, I say.

I bet I can tell you why. When they built the wheel they inserted the spokes into the spoke holes on the hub backwards, that is the "obvious" way instead of the correct way.

I had problems with the rear wheel (Bontrager SSR paired spokes) ever since I bought the bike at the end of September. It needed to be trued shortly after I bought it, but then it lasted several months. The day it really came out of whack was when I decided to put some skinnier tires on the wheel. It came out of true within a few miles and it has not been able to stay true ever since, even when putting the wider tires back on and having the lbs true it again. I also tried increasing the tension and getting the drive-side tension as even as possible (by tone), but to no avail. At least I learned about tensioning, spoke torsion, etc.

I know these wheels suck, so I might just have to get a good set, but we'll see how it goes. I weigh less than 140 so it's not like I'm too heavy for these wheels or something.

And I do have another bike...a mtn bike...but that's not as fun to ride on the road. I do love to take it on some single track when I get the chance, but that's not very often.

I hate to say it but if it has the name Bontrager on it- then I don't buy it. This does come from several years ago (Many really) when quality control was lacking.

Bought in September and been retrued several times since. Something wrong with the wheel builder or the wheel. Whichever way it is- It will still be under warranty so get the LBS to sort it and quick.

The lesson to be learned here is that having a Backup Bike is not optional.

Well I got the wheel back today (newly rebuilt) and quickly took it for my 3.5 mile test ride. Unfortunately, the new build had done absolutely nothing and the wheel was already way out of whack. I immediately took it back to the shop and they couldn't believe it. Now they're gonna get the wheel replaced for me under warranty; I just have to bring in the bike so they can read the serial number off of it, etc. Yay for Bontrager wheels.:notamused:

See how easy N+1 gets into our mindset? But I had problems with breaking spokes as well. However I chalk it up to being over weight and having a lightweight rear wheel. I got rims and hubs with straight pull aero-spokes and It seems to have helped. However I was having a new rear wheel built but it has never made in home. Now I am thinking I need a backup bike.

I bet if you drive around on garbage day you can find a half decent used wheel that mounts fine on your bike until the new one arrives.

yea I really think you need another bike. It is the perfect excuse :D

Got rid of the wheels on my (formerly a) 7.5 FX. Built a pair of Mavic A719's with Ultegra hubs and DT DB 14-15-14 spokes. 3X 32spoke. Very, very nice!

Heh, I started this thread two months ago but never gave an update.

Shortly after I started this thread, Trek replaced both wheels since they couldn't get the same color rear wheel for me. So now the wheels are black instead of silver, and it actually looks better.

Oh, and I have a drop-bar road bike now, too....a Neuvation F100 with Ultegra SL. It's fantastic! :D

Couldn't resist the N + 1 Eh?

Now start clearing out the garage or buy a big shed for the future
