Busted U lock

Hey Bikeforums.net. I had someone bend my u-lock out of shape when they tried to steal my bike. The U lock is now a figure 8 lock, and I can't get the key to turn more than a milimeter or two in the lock. The bike shop here suggested I ask krytonite and check out forums on-pine, so here I am. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might free my bike? Is this something a locksmith can can handle?

A locksmith could handle it, yes. A battery operated angle grinder with a cut-off wheel would also rip it to pieces.

I'd go with a locksmith. Good luck! :)

Out of curiosity, exactly which model of lock is it? Good thing you still have your bike!

Oh, and definitely go for an angle grinder.

Pay a locksmith to open a busted u-lock is nuts! Some large bolt cutters would probably be cheaper than the locksmith.... be sure to have the key with you anyways!

^^^ If thief couldn't break the lock by twisting it what would make you think that bolt cutters would do the job? *confused*

Gee, no one even asked if it was one of the old U-locks. Maybe try a bic pen first, before paying a lock smith.

If it is a new U-lock, then yes - locksmith or battery operated angle grinder with a cut-off wheel.

Angle grinder and a minute or 2 of your time will take care of it. Take someone to hold the lock steady while you cut it, and do not touch the cut ends of the lock, they will be mighty hot right after you cut them.

Wait for the thief to come back with bolt cutters or an angle grinder and take your bike when it's freed.

Why do you think they wouldn't? The right bolt cutters can and will do the job, might even be the tool of choice for the locksmith.

Grinder/cutter is going to be your best bet. We use the Plasma cutter at work:D
