City streets and paved bike paths. What type of bike??

I currently have a Cannondale 08' F5 for some off road adventure, but looking to buy another bike.
I live in Brooklyn but also like to escape the city and ride paved bike paths, quiet streets, and parks outside the city. What kind of bike do you think would suit this type of riding? Should I look into a road bike or something different?
I don't bike more than 20 miles.

A Road or Hybrid is fine. Would buy a road bike since you already have the Cannondale to use if you want to ride in a more upright position. Just change the tires on the F5 to slicks and it'll be good for your 'escape rides'.

That's actually a great idea, and it's cheaper.
Any idea on some good slicks to put there?

Schwalbe Kojak Slicks are pretty nice and rolls fast, plus comes in 26 x 2.0" if you want a similar sized tire that came on your F5 or in the narrower 26 x 1.35 size. And you can pump them up 70-95 psi depending on the bead you choose (wire or folding). Big Apples is a lower cost alternative.

Just check/search around and there are plenty of non-knobby tires out there.
