Travel with bike - advice sought

I've been lurking on the forums for the past month or so after starting to get back into cycling. I'd not ridden a bike for about 14 years after getting pretty big playing high school and NCAA football. I'm living in the Persian Gulf teaching and needed some exercise so I got a new Scott S30 from eBay and shipped it over. I'm loving it, trying to ride consistently after school, still slowly building up my fitness (150km a week) but I've been able to lose about 17 pounds so far.

So...here's my dilemma. I'm heading back to Canada for the summer break and was really looking forward to taking the bike home and enjoying some riding with trees, hills, etc....nice change from the flat, windy desert. I booked my flights home with Lufthansa and then asked about a bike. They want $500 to bring it home and back. It's going to be tough to justify to my wife to pay $500 to bring my bike home for the summer when it only cost $850 to start with.

Do any of you experienced travelers and riders have any creative solutions for traveling with a bike without breaking the bank?

Leave it there and buy a used bike for your Canada breaks. Hit CL and other places once you get in Canada. In reading between the lines, I see this as a delicate negotiation with you wife. You need to line up your arguments for another bike purchase in advance and rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. Look in the mirror as you practice so you can have that look of sincerity in your eyes. And, of course, use the argument "This is an investment in my health. How can you put a price tag on that?"

Can you try booking with Air Canada?

Apparently Lufthansa has the most expensive charges for bicycles:
