Would Kerry have to stop riding if elected?

If John Kerry really is a serious cyclist, becoming president would probably put a quick stop to that. I'm sure it's not as fun to ride in circles on the White House driveway surrounded by men in suits.

i guess the security agents would have to join him. now, the only question is whether they would sport the biking clothes or stay with the black suits.

Hi,
Presidents have a huge retreat they can go to. Perhaps he could ride there. Would suck tho..... $7K Ottrot and you can't go riding most of the time. Maybe the Ottrot is a consolation prize if he loses.
Don't think he's gonna lose, no more charity events for 4 years...

Doesn't Bush jog every day? I would think Kerry would establish a route or 2 around DC that could be made secure. I'm sure he could get Robin Williams and some others to ride with him.

Does he have an Ottrott? Bastard.

NO PROBLEM! Whenever the president comes to St. Louis, they always totally close down the main expressway through town, usually during rush hour when everybody's trying to either get to work or to get home. Whatever they find necessary to close down so that the president can bicycle safely in DC is OK with me.

Remember when Jimmy Carter was elected? His hobbies had been riding motorcycles and hunting. The Secret Service sat him down in a quiet room and told him:

"NO."

And that was the end of that, for four years.

I'm sure Senator Kerry, if he is elected, will occasionally be permitted to ride for a couple of miles on very carefully prepared, high-visibility charity events, and around Camp David, but that will be about it. I wish I didn't have to say that sort of thing is one of the less important prices of being the leader of the most powerful country in the world, but it just is.

That is exactly why I would never want to be president. You must give up your freedom so that you can try to make a difference for others while what really happens is that the opposite party blocks your every effort to create change. No thanks. I would rather keep my freedom.

Is there really much difference between running in the streets and cycling? No, way...being president or not cycling..Don't presidents sometimes say to the Secret Service, No...?
Seems reports Truman or someone just outright disobeyed their demands..
Supposedly Camp David is huge? Good paved roads about for cyclists...?I would not trade my road bike for Air Force One.

I really don't understand this. Why would anyone have to give it up? I may be a little naive here, but surely the prez has enough power to do whatever he damn well pleases.

Its a matter of security. The president can't take a leak these days without the Secret Service conducting an extensive sweep of the crapper before hand.

For Kerry to go out for a pedal, you'd have a peloton of protective agents and a support caravan that would make the TdF look like a Sunday outing.

And on all matters concerning the presidents security, the Service has the final word.

Chris..How many Australian prime ministers have been assassinated? Can't imagine the president being told what to do.?
Guess body armour all does not work against bullets. Don't think Kerry is a pretty committed roadie...
Maybe a downside of being president..Even after office, don't they get some secret service detail? Might never be safe on a bike again- ever? Still can't see how running is more secure than cycling ...? Wonder if Secret Service has cycling trained agents, yet- in case...? Could put them all in USPS kit as a decoy...? With Briko sunglasses on, say you can't tell one cyclist from another.... We all know they run..About time they take up cycling.
Wonder what kind of kit Secret service agents train in .. Pretty much you see them in black suits.

no he just fills the job or office of president supposedly executing congesses ledgislation and comanding the army(congress still had to declare war).
We have three branches to our government- executive- judicial- and legislative originally none was to have much more power and the all had ways of limiting the others the legislature(congress does have slightly more theoretical power than the others as it should be, as they are some 100 senators and 400 something representitives. Though the office of president has gain few questionable powers over the years by the lust for power and the masses being fools(typical humans).
The president still can not walk in to congess when ever he likes he has to be invited.

Once your president, you and your family are under the guard of the SS for life. Even the Clintons still have protection all over them, although not as bad as before, but will alwyas be folowed by the suits.

I dunno, but I can think of one I'd like to add to the list.

I heard once that former Queensland Premier Wayne Goss used to ride every morning - even while he was actually premier. Maybe it's just different in the states. Either way, running isn't really any safer than cycling, but to be honest I wouldn't want that sort of "security" if it was going to intrude on my lifestyle that much, I think I'd be happy taking the risks of being shot instead.

A lot has changed. Someone mentioned Truman, who was known for his brisk walks around D.C. There's just no way President Kerry is going to be able to slip out for a spin around the Mall without a huge motorcade.

On the other hand, I'm looking forward to the sight of Maria Theresa leaning out a window screaming "!Venga! !Venga! !Venga!"

Where it will obviously stay, collecting dust and tires rotting.

Yes Kerry does own an Ottrott, and a Legend. He is a big Serotta fan.

Anyone actually read of Kerry's actual riding habits...Is he a cycling addict? Seems of late, a Supreme court justice, who runs to the Supreme Court, was attacked and mugged...Think Justice Stevens? Actually, several member of Congress have been attacked on the way to the Capitol...
Think a president could do the Ride across Iowa...? No touring... I would have to resign..
Yes, Armstrong gave Bush a Trek..Armstrong is involved with the 'League of American Bicyclists'...Probably pr purposes... Did it help cycling advocacy...Often Texas is thought of as one of the most cycling unfriendly states ? ..Bush should retire to Crawford, he gets to take his Trek with him?

Kerry already has Secret Service follow him around - check it out:

Quote:
Kerry takes a spill from bike
CONCORD, Mass. (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry took a spill from his bicycle after hitting a patch of sand during a ride Sunday afternoon, but he was uninjured, campaign officials said.

Kerry was riding south on a two-lane road at about 1:00 p.m. in the direction of Walden Pond State Reservation in Concord, a quiet, suburban town about 18 miles northwest of Boston.

He was approaching a stop light at the intersection with Route 2 and was slowing down when he veered left into the oncoming lane and fell, according to an Associated Press reporter who witnessed him fall. Secret Service agents and local police immediately stopped traffic while Kerry and a handful of bicycling companions moved to the shoulder.

"He's fine. They took the bike into the bike shop, and he went home," said Kerry campaign adviser Michael Meehan.

The Massachusetts senator was riding his custom Serotta bicycle, and was wearing a helmet.

Kerry had returned to Massachusetts, where he has a home in Boston's posh Beacon Hill section, for a break from the campaign trail.

Kerry, 60, rides his bicycle as often as he can get free time on the campaign trail. He even brings it along with him on the campaign plane.
SOURCE (usatoday.com)

Not sure if I would enjoy my ride as much if secret service was following me around (by the sounds of it, via car)

Secret Service...I would expect the physical regimen they go through...I would expect them capable of hammering the president.? Maybe they are getting prepared to protect the prez. by doing 24 hour Adrenlain races?
