Crossbar adapter for trek hybrid
Hello Everyone
New member here. My girlfriend just purchased a new bicycle, a trek 7200, and now we are having trouble getting the saris bones 2 trunk rack to work with her bike. In order to get the bikes so they are hitting each other or bumping into the car the rack configuration needed to be changed which puts her front wheel about 8" off the ground - too close for me to feel comfortable (the saris website recommends 12-15" off the ground). Upon really studying the configuration I thought we could put the crossbar adapter around the seat tube and under the seat stay for the back portion of the adapter while the front of the adapter would be clamped to the downtube. I would image this woudl raise her bike approximately 6" and allow for safe transport of the bikes. Also, this seems like a safer way to carry the bike as the adapter would be hooked to the welded frame instead of to the seat post and handlebar stem, both parts that can move if not properly tightened.
To get to my questions:
1. has anyone tried this configuration for the cross bar adapter?
2. is there a cross bar adapter that would accommodate going around the downtube (for her bike it looks like there would need to be 5" of open space and a clamp that would fully stablize the downtube)? I have looked at the allen tension crossbar adapter and saris bike beam. Does anybody have these adapters and can measure how much space is available to accomodate the downtube?
3. I am open to hearing any suggestions one might have. I can provide pictures if necessary to allow you to visualize the problem.
Thanks for the help.

Yes.. there is
I hear you .
We have two 7100's and one is my wifes - just got them a month ago - We have the same rack as well -
First time I tried to rack hers - I ran into the same problem as you - The wife (the smarter one of us) noted -... "Didn't the guys at the bike shop say we'd need a cross bar " - Right she was - ... I crammed it on the best I could and down to the LBS we went - They did have the snap on x-bar and all is good -
I say call you local bike shop and ask them -
If they can't help you let me know - I'll check the cross bar brand when I get home tonight -

If the seatpost and stem don't move with your weight on them, they aren't going to move from the weight of the bike hanging from them.

Hello Fritz
Thank you for your helpful reply. If you could check the brand on your x-bar I would appreciate it. Also, are you attaching the x-bar between seatpost and handlebar stem or are you attaching how I had mentioned in the previous post (seat tube to downtube)?
Once again, I greatly appreciate your help.
