Performance coupon code at retail store?

Does anyone know if you can use Performance coupon codes at the retail stores? For example, I got the number 6000375 from these forums, but can I go into the store and just give them the number?

Unless you have a VERY forgiving manager at your local store, you'll need the paper coupon from which the code number was taken...

The Performance store in Fremont, California would not do it. They wanted the coupon.

Well, they let me use it in the store. No problems at all. When asked where I got the code, I said, "from the Internet," and the cashier shrugged his shoulders and typed it in.
