Big sale at LBS
Over the weekend there was a big sale at one of my local LBS. I of course popped in to pick up a few items. The clerk who rang me up boasted that they sold over 65 bikes the day before and there was no recession in my area. I said that was great, but I sure haven't seen a whole lot of bikers. The clerk then replied that most riders always had the excuse that it was too cold, too windy, too humid, too hot too.....you name it. I then guessed that most of the bikes that were sold were flat barred and 2 of the clerks nodded in agreement. I told them that people need to be buying more road bikes, because you can more easily chew up the miles. On my 40 mile ride on Sunday on a beautiful day weather wise, I think I saw ONE other biker the entire time. Sad.

Why does someone need to "chew up the miles" in order to enjoy cycling.
I can enjoy a 3 hour ride covering 30 miles just fine, thanks!

You don't have to...it was just my opinion. Biking for me is about reaching destinations. My time for biking is also limited, so I tend to want to enjoy more miles or reach other cities.

Its all a part of my elaborate scheme
1. lose about 20 lbs by riding as much and as far as possible
2. become like little darwin and enjoy 3h rides of only 30 miles.

On the other issue, I am a fair weather cyclist, because my cycling is all about the enjoyment. I am rarely willing to battle the elements. Although, I have to admit, I do feel like I should be a little bolder about getting out on the road.
So, I fully understand those people buying bikes that don't go out until the weather is better for riding.
For speed, I will push myself at times. but was more apt to do that in my youth. Now I enjoy the slower pace I have set for myself.
For me, it is the journey, not the destination.
Perhaps our paths will cross at some point, and hopefully we will each be at a joyful part of our journey.

So, I can only hope that I don't find the 20 pounds as you lose it.
