If you like all aluminum frame and a suppension fork,7100 is next choice,tire/gearing are the same.

It's a low end comfort bike,so I wouldn't expect awsomeness from it. I had a 7200 and beat the crap out of it. It gave me zero probs and the guy I sold it to is still riding it. I would not go up to the 7100 unless you have carpel tunnel issues that would require front suspension. At these price points, the suspension forks are low grade and generally can't even be locked out. Best to stick with the rigid fork.
If you want performance, look at something else. If you want basic transportation, nothing wrong with it.

True, when i switched over to a rigid fork from a supension fork bike, my hands and shoulder was really uncomfortable,i stopped that problem by wearing gel padded gloves, the suppsension fork didnt bother me at all,it actually worked, seems to be a good item to have on hybrid, since its not a bike for speed.

I would take it over a 7100 any day. That being said though, the gearing is more mountain bike like than the upper models in that line.

i did hear that the 7100 had a suspension fork but what is the benefit of using it over the fx model that has a rigid fork?

I once recieved an email back from Trek saying i should keep my rigid fork on my FX,they said if i replaced the fork with the one from any 7000 series it will have a negative effect on the geometry.Fx series are fitness bikes and 7000 series are hybrids,at least thats what's Trek's classification implied.A front suspension coushion the ride but rob some of the pedal effort ( or is it the rear?),i never care about that when i had one.

Your 7.3 FX is most certainly a hybrid as well. I don't care what Trek says through it's marketing organ. But hybrids do tend to swing, as a pendulum, towards mountain-bikes and road-bikes. On the very same bicycle as well. The FX - series hybrids swing towards road-bikes. And the 7000 - series swing more towards the mtn.-bikes. At least some of them do.

I have an '08 7000. I have almost 6K miles on it so far. It is a good entry level bike, I had no problems with it. I have since gotten a flat bar road bike, but the 7000 is a comfortable bike and I still use it for weekend tours and long rides. However it is heavy and has entry-level components, but I have had nothing but good experiences on the bike. I never tried any off road with it, mostly paved trails and hard pack fairly smooth bike paths.

The 7xxx series are 'comfort' bikes;upright riding position, most have suspension, wide tires, wide cushy seat. The FX series are 'fitness' bikes;they're more performance oriented, but not as focused as an actual flat bar road bike. 7xxx are aimed more at people who just want to ride around the neighborhood or MUP,the FX are aimed at people who want an all-rounder with a touch of speed.

I have 7100 that i bought about 5 years ago for $300-400. Its been a good bike, i just took it in for its first major overhaul. I think id rather have the trigger shifters than the handle turns, plus i didnt care for the included saddle, but other than that a solid basic bike.

My future wife has a 7000 and she likes it. Its the Womens model though, with a step though. I didn't care for it myself it just didn't feel right. I went with the FX instead, but it was a little over 100 more than hers. The shop we went to though was at MSRP or below on all the bikes.
