Using normal shoes with SPD M520s

    Hi

I made the conversion to clipless a few months ago and I am loving it!

However, I only have one bike. If I just want to use my bike to get to a place that is 3 mins away, is it ok if I just use normal shoes with the double-sided Shimano SPD M520 Pedals

I am aware that it is more uncomfortable than using the cycling shoes but for just a 3 min cycle I think it's pointless to have to bring a spare pair of shoes.

Is this OK for the pedals? Will the pressing down on top of the clipping-mechanism make the pedal less effective at keeping the shoe engaged when I do use the cleats and shoes?

Sure. I do it routinely for less than two or three miles. More comfortable if you have a stiff sole on the street shoes.
Some people are like a Slinky ... not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you shove them down the stairs.

    Grab a pair of these:

They clip on, giving you a platform on one side of your pedals. I'll bet you can find them cheaper at your LBS. Ask them if they have any pull-off SPD adapters. I know a lot of Shimano pedals ship with these in the box, but most people just toss them or leave them with the bike shop.

These serve the same function but they are aluminum instead of plastic.

    That's gonna leave a mark.
