    Older Mountain bike....

I just picked up a used bike and although the previous kept it in good shape, he painted it with an automotive paint. I'm curious of the manufacturer the serial is RG430996 , it's steel with shimano components, no shocks and the back brake cable goes thru the top tube as a nice feature. The 96 in the serial is probably the year? Any ideas what make? A Raleigh?

We can at least nail down the era if you told us which Shimano components. Also, are the brakes cantis or V-brakes?

What kind of shifters? How many speeds? That might narrow it down.

Took a quick look at our city's bike reg. database (don't tell). Most of the bikes (about eight) with serial numbers RG followed by 6 digits are Raleighs. Two of them begin with RG43. They're both Raleigh Gator 18-speeds, originally registered here in 1996 (meaning they could be older).

Based on the info provided, what you have there is an Italian made Rouldolf Galiglianni frame made in September 1994 ( http://www.rgframe.php?tserial.id.it ) under contract for the Roma Metro Police Dept. It was likely an early "police model" that was sold at a surplus auction once it was repainted in 1998. Very valuable if you ask me, interested in selling it.

Okay, I don't know what it is. You better post more info (I wish identification could be this easy).

shimano shifters and 18 speed... thanks as well. It's probably a Raleigh Gator... but the Rouldolf Galiglianni
    story is intriguing.
