i am new at buying bikes, but i will need to buy one for college and other stuff. the region where i will be using it has a lot of hills as well. the bike i'm using now is a roadmaster that i found on the side of the road. also, i am about 220-240lbs.

so far i'm looking at:
raleigh mojave 5
trek 4300 disc

and i will probably need:
hard tail
not 1 speed
front suspension?
budget is around $4-500

any help would be appreciated.

would a trek 4300 disc be a good bike to start off with?

I've got the Trek 4300, and I beat the heck out of it regularly on trails, hills, and more serious mountain biking. I love it, and certainly recommend it. I would say, however, that you could save yourself some money by just getting the regular v-brake model. Disc brakes are probably overkill unless you're really hurtling down super technical mountain trails. As a point of reference, I'm 6'2", 210 lbs and the 19.5" 4300 fits me beautifully.

I have a Mojave 8.0 and I love it. I beat the crap out of it so far and I have had no problems at all. I was 5'10 295 when I started riding it in Feb. I am now 257 and its still problem free after 1500 miles. The 5.0 is very similar, the main difference is the lockout front shock which is nice. I ride my wife's Trek 3700 when the weather is really crappy and I like that too. You can't really go wrong with either. Just compare the components and pick the one that suits you better.

just curious... why are you thinking about mountain bikes? are you taking it off-road?
