A few more pics here...can anyone ID this for me? I assume it's a Trek 7XX from the 90s, maybe? Also, where would I find the serial number? I looked everywhere!

Did you look at the bottom of frame? right between the down tube and the seat tube.

The serial # should be on the bottom of the BB shell.

That stem is awesome!

Please tell me you're not going to make it a fixie. Just give it TLC and ride the heck out of it.

That's the weirdest stem I've ever seen. I can't wait to get some time with it and see if it's comfortable to ride with!

I figured the serial was on the BB, but it has a guide plate in place for the derailleur cables, so I'll have to futz with it tomorrow and see if I can move it.

Found it. I couldn't wait. Looks like a 1983 Trek 850 and a Google search turned up this page, which is precisely what I have except for one thing: My front derailleur is a Deore, so that must have been added later. Everything else seems stock except the Bontrager Revolt SS tires. It's actually two of the Revolt fronts, not a matched set of a front and a rear.

I am SO going to build this into something. I see many hours of toiling in my future. :)

Oh I'm going to love it just the way it is, no fixie conversion here. Gonna clean it up today and try to get it on the road.

I was going to guess mid-'80s. I had the same stem, or one that looked just like it, on my first mountain bike, an '84 (or so) Mongoose.
One thing to watch for: The bars were too close on the 'Goose, and I always wanted to put on a longer stem. But the quill diameter was .833 inch (the old BMX/cruiser standard, about 21.15mm) instead of the English/Japanese 22.2mm that became much more common. I never did find a stem.
That 22.2, by the way, is commonly called "one inch," even though an inch is actually 25.4mm. Who knows why?

it's a Trek... yup, definitely a Trek

I spent two hours with the Simple Green and a scrub brush on it this morning. Looking pretty good. Needs some more scrubbing, then a full lube job. After that I'm going to get it re-cabled, as every single cable is in atrocious shape. Then I'm going to ride it all summer. After that?

Been making some plans. I'm not gonna restore this to original. I'm gonna strip it and get it powder coated a gaudy red color and add some various new parts. Definitely new tires (Liking the idea of Schwalbe Big Apples) as these are pretty cracked. Perfect fresh tread but a million age cracks all over. Looks like this bike got rode hard, never cleaned, then got new rubber and put in a garage somewhere for ten years.

I'm going to build a pretty little hybrid out of this thing and it is going to be glorious. Custom graphics and everything. It should be ready sometime in spring 2010. :)

Yep- designed so you could change height and fore-and-aft adjustments without tools. I haven't seen one of those on a bike since the '80's... go figure.
