Hi, I'm looking to get a new bike and I'm not sure what I want.

I want (at least I think I want) a road bike. This bike isn't going to be seeing much, if anything, else than the road and the greenway, so I think a road bike would fit my needs. My dad, however, says that I should get a mountain bike. He says that road bikes require really good balance and that I would be making a bad decision. I dunno, I just think I would enjoy a road bike more.

On the matter of road bikes, I have a really limited price range. Like under $250. I'm pretty much restricted to craigslist and maybe checking the local bike shop, which I haven't done yet. With that said, I've found a bike that I'd like your knowledge on.

It's a Peugeot, and from what I can gather over wikipedia, it's the X80 series. From what wikipedia says, it's really rare, less than a hundred exist. It also says that the brakes on it aren't very good. The ad says that it has Shimano SLR brakes and gearset, though. That makes me think that they've been replaced. The best part of the bike? 75 bucks. And it's a pretty bike too. I'm falling in love with it. I'm going to talk to my dad about it and see if I can ride it some time. This bike makes me think that it's too good to be true though, but I really really hope it isn't.

If that doesn't fit you, then forget about it. Just have to keep trolling craigslist with that sort of budget. Other places to check are Goodwills or a local bike co-op, if there is one.

You definitely want to try out a roadbike. Even a clumsy fool like me can keep one upright.

Actually, I'm 6'2'' so that's a huge selling point for me. Any other thoughts on the bike? I love the colors, personally. It looks so sharp IMO.

Yeah my mom hates road bikes for the same reason- she finds them too unsteady.

I assure you, this is not really a problem.
Not to say there aren't more stable bikes out there, but it really isn't a problem. I really don't understand why the general public buys so many mountain bikes-they are so cumbersome to ride around town compared to a road bike. I mean, it's pretty simple: just look at the names. One is made for... Roads. The other... Mountains.

It looks like a solid bike. This would have been a midrange, quality model at the time (downtube shifters, SLR components, possibly cromo frame).

I do not think that its an X80, and wikipedia is wrong (who knew?) since the rainbow scheme came after the X80 went out of production. See:

fyi, you can also set up a search on ebay that only lists bikes sold within x miles of your area code.

I would also say that unless you have a serious medical problem that causes balance issues that a road bike is the way to go. The idea that you'll have trouble balancing is...silly.

I don't know about the rainbow color in the middle

check for cracks, squeaks, clicks and ruts on the paint. I would offer $50 then take it to the LBS and have them do a tune up. It should cost you anothr $50.

If you are 6' 2" I think that bike might actually be a bit small for you since it loks like it may be a 56 or 58 cm, which would be more my size, and I am 6' and tend to ride small frames for my height.

But, it looks like it would be a good buy at that price. It would also leave you enough to get it tuned up and replace tires if needed within your budget.

With your desired riding, I would agree that a road bike is your best bet, and getting used is the way to go, since with your budget, you won't get much of a bike (if any) new.

Unless you have some sort of physical issue, you shouldn't have any problems balancing a road bike.

Dang. Unfortunately the bike was bought before I could get the chance.

I'll go to the local bike shop tomorrow or friday though, so I'll see what I could find there.
