Close encounters (of another kind)

The title of this thread sounds more like it refers to near accidents. But...

What about those encounters with motorists (truck drivers, etc.) that happen at red lights? Someone pulls up next to you (you're on your bike,) rolls down the window and starts chatting with you.

"How far do you ride? Really? Wow!"

"Hey buddy, get on the sidewalk!"

"Thought about joining the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign? There's a Bicycle User Group in your area."

"Hey buddy, get on the sidewalk!"

"I used to ride three days a week."

"HEY!!!" (...as I jump out of my skin!)

"You're not a car..."

"Excuse me, can you tell me how to get to..."

Am I a lightning rod, or something?

One that I got last week as I was in the lane to turn toward that traffic jam at the southern end of the Gold Coast:

"You've got the ride mode of transport for going over there."

Sometimes it's good to make an impression :D

WTF does this mean anyway? Of course I'm not a car. Do you ever respond to this with 'Neither are you'?

RonH (from these forums), I and another guy had some girl wave at us (most likely RonH) at a stop light this weekend on our ride. That's about as close as I get to conversations.

BTW Pete, you RonH and I need to get together for a ride. We'll call it the Northeast Atlanta Bike Forums Ride-a-thon! Members from all over the planet post here and the three of us live fairly close to each other, who knew?!?

John, I thought she was waving at Henry. ;)

Yes this was another "first". There have only been a few other BF members who have actually met and ridden together. I think there was JonR and Jonathan Ramsey in KC, GirlzNGear group ride, and a few others.

There are several Atlanta area members (and lots of Georgia members). If we could ALL get together for a ride that would be a truly momentous occasion. Sort of like the Tour de France or the Olympics. :D

My favorite to date was a car full of young guys, about high school age. They pulled along side of me and the guy in the back seat rolled down his window and said, "Hey, how fast are you going?"

"About twenty five," I told him.

He responded, "Wow, that's awsome!" to me, and, "Hey, speed up!" to the driver.

I was able to keep up with them until about thirty five mph, with the guys in the car cheering the whole way. I caught them again at a traffic light and they all gave me high fives.

It was pretty cool.

I can imagine what the CarForums website post would look like to the question: What happens at a red light when a bicyclist rides up to your window and tells you that you are rude, and you should NEVER honk at a cyclist again? That thread would be made by the woman I did that to. That is my funniest bicycling story. I don't know if I would have the "bearings" to do something like that again, but I'm glad I did it at least once.

Allister and I actually got together for a ride last year (pretty scary eh?). I also hear that Cabledonut is visiting the Gold Coast in the near future.

Sounds good to me! Anyone want to pick a date and distance?

There's a lot of road bikers around my area and when spinning somewhere it's not unusual to hear someone yell ROADIE! at the top of their lungs.

Only if you promise the girls will wave at me...

Just joking. I would love to.

The best for me would be on a holiday, or maybe a Saturday afternoon (I work from 12:00 to 2:00 on Saturdays, and Sundays are family days.)

Sounds great to me! :D

(Too bad we can't get some of these other folk to join us!)

Baker:

Just today, a car squeezed too close to me and I shouted, "Get over!" into the passenger's open window.

:p

Maybe not smart, maybe very smart...
