A Different Kind of Bike Book...And I Loved It.
I was in Minneapolis on business and while in a Barnes&Noble stumbled on a brand new book called Heft on Wheels by Mike Magnuson (Harmony Pub.).
Essentially, a memoir by a guy who was a 39 year old, 275 lb, alcoholic, pack a day smoker. Maganuson is a published author with several novels and articles in GQ, Bicycling and Esquire...and very funny. The book is as much about his of out-of-control lifestyle as it is about cycling...which brought him back to even keel, his job and his family. I found it inspirational and humerous. After six days off the bike I couldn't wait to get back on.
Interestingly, when I got a couple of chapters into the book I remembered that I had heard Mike Magnuson a couple of years ago on the NPR program What Do Ya Know with Michael Feldman. At the time he was being interviewed about his other memoir, Lummox. If you search the old archives of the program you can find audio of the program and the interview. Need a good summertime read and you've already finished The Race by Dave Sheilds, you might check this one out.
Nice job Mike. God bless you. I'd love to ride with you sometime.
