Your worst injury...

What was your worst injury, cycling or noncycling?

Cycling...not so much injury, bruised knee, and scrapes.

Noncycling...concussion.

When I was like 10 I went down this huge hill at a state park and when I got to the bottom I hit a big crack in the pavement and went over the bars and slid on my face for about five feet before going in some grass. Very painful. Now that I am a little older not many injuries come from my bike.

Not too bad for me - just a scraped up arm and sore muscles. But my (then) 7-yr-old son hit his brother's bike one day while going very slowly, did a slow-motion flip over the handlebars, and ended up in the hospital with an injured pancreas. Showed me a thing or two about how easily we can get injured!

Cycling - the cracked ribs slowed me up for a couple days, but the separated shoulder is still bothering me two years later ... my ligaments are shot and so the shoulder keeps dislocating. Tearing my achilles tendons on a long ride in 2002 has left me with some lingering issues as well.

Non-cycling - burning my left foot to the bone in 2001. I was off work for 5 weeks because of the agonizing pain I was in that whole time, and because of all the dressing changes (more agonizing pain). It was 3 months before I could be upright for longer than about 10 minutes. I had to go to physio to learn to walk again. It was years before I could bend my left foot. And I will likely be scarred for life. That injury also contributed to the achilles tendon injury.

It seems like the older I get, the worse the injuries are getting; I have scars from stitched cuts and such from childhood, 'arthur' from sports injuries in my 20's, a cracked rib in my 30's, and 3 broken bones in my 40's.

The worst was the collarbone last fall -- broke it in 6 pieces! Now I have the stainless plate and 8 screws -- Lance just had to copy me......

Me, too. Concussion and dislocated finger=8 stitches, road rash, split lip...

Torn lateral miniscus mountain biking

Another miniscus injury skiing ( so I've hurt both knees)

I wish there were no such thing as "sports injuries"

When I was 21 (I'm 48 now), I was riding my bike to work. Then suddenly, I woke up in the hospital, in a lot of pain. I learned that I was hit by a car, head-on. I still don't remember the ambulance or accident ride. I was bruised badly enough that it was tough to walk. It took me about four weeks before I got back on the bike again. No broken bones, though. The bike was trashed, and the helmet was crushed.

Worst cycling? Fractured right collarbone on the distal end.

Noncycling from an accident? January, a fall on the ice walking to my van. I broke my tailbone and got a bad concussion. I don't know how I passsed calculus last semester, since I went through half of the semester with no real short term memory.

Assault related? Shot in the left leg, and I have a titanium plate screwed onto my shin from that one.

Non-Cycling:
1) Electrocuted. 880 volts straight to ground. Helicopter ride to the hospirtal in the burn unit 4 months and out of work over a year.
2) Hit head on by a drunk driver. Another helicopter ride. Both legs broken, neck broken two places, right thumb severed almost all the way off. Took 45 minutes to cut me out of the car. He walked away.

Cycling: Concussion.

• I've broken my radial head [funnybone] in my left arm off in a cycling crash.
• I've cracked my cheek bone and done nerve damage in the right side of my face in a bike wreck.
• I've torn the tendons/ligaments in the back of my right hand also in a bike wreck.

Outside of cycling- I've broken both feet in a rock climbing accident.

Racquetball: Hit a wall, torn Labrum, torn Rotator Cuff, Arthritis under the Collar bone, possible Biceps tendon tear.
Going in for surgery in a few weeks, 6 months of healing time.......
Mountain Biking: Flipped over (to my right) down a 20 foot 45 degree embankment about three times and DROVE the right brake handle (to the hilt) into my right thigh JUST missing the Femoral artery. Blood starts flying out so I put my finger in the wound and start calling 911.........I thought I was going to die...it's a weird feeling...thinking you're going to die.
