Woot Woot... Rode my first Century on Saturday, and survived!
Hey Kids,
Just rode in Orange County Wheelman's Amtrak Century on Sept. 11 from Irvine to San Diego. Great ride, great support, and other than 98 degree temps when we reached San Diego, it was pretty fun.
I was rolling along fairly well until about mile 75 (my longest ride ever was 67 miles) and general malaise set in. I dumped some cold water on me, felt instantly refreshed. That is, until I hit the BIG Hill of Torrey Pines at mile 80. It wasn;t the worst hill I've ever done, but at mile 80, and it starting to get pretty warm, I was strugglin' a bit. But I was still passing people going uphill, and I think that was all the motivation I needed. That, and the fact that there were popsicles at the top waiting for me !
I finished the 103 mile ride in 6 hours, 14 minutes. I wanna shave of those 14 minutes, and get in under 6 hours next time. I thought I'd be dead sore Sunday morning, but other than a little stiffness, and a little soreness in the butt area... I felt pretty good, and actually ended up walking around Sea World all day. The only major pain I had was somewhere aorund mile 75 or so, my left knee starting to get an annoying pain below my knee cap in the middle... I'm guessing it is either a fit issue, or just some tendinitis... but it's still a bit tender if I flex it out a bit.
Overall, a good time was had and OCW put on a great first Century for me!

Congratulations!......and this is on your butchered Brooks?
This was the second year in a row in which I found myself too late to register for this ride, early part of summer... I'll try again next year...

You know it was !
And overall, the saddle performed wonderfully. my butt muscles were a bit sore near the end, but if definitely wasn't from just sitting on the saddle, but from actually working!
I registered the Monday they opened it at about 6:30am... I was the 18th person to register... by Tueday afternoon is was all booked up... They sell out every year from what I've been told... OCW puts on a pretty good ride for sure... I'm not sure how the Support compares to other rides, but Iw as pretty happy

COOL! now you got it in your head that you can do 100 mile.. next century will be much easier and more fun!

Exactly... I think a lot of it was mental to me... Never having broke the 67 mile mark before, to tack on another 33 miles was gonna be tough. But it wasn't too bad at all. And I partied in New Orleans for a week before the ride, and didn't get on a bike for a week and a half...
I'll probably try another century or two, and see if I wanna venture into double metric territory!
