Most of the older analog speedometers used a gear on the end of a cable driven off of a cog attached to the front wheel. This is my experance, but I haven't installed one in years.

I got 2 Cateye computerized for about $15 each from Nashbar and installed them myself (2 different bikes). Easy as pie. Time, speed, trip mileage, 2nd trip mileage, top speed, odometer, avg. speed.
Your speedometer will add drag to your bike. Is this a retro bike?
