Go to a bike shop or to REI and ask questions and try some on and buy there.

There are a multitude of things that are worth buying online. Shoes are not one of them.

Good advise if you live where there are bike shops large enough to inventory shoes.

As cyclists, we spend quite a bit of time making sure that our chosen mode of transportation fits us well. We have three contact points with that mode - hands, butt, feet. People get ergonomic grips and wear gloves, people buy padded shorts and shop around for the perfect saddle. It's certainly worth it to spend the time, and drive if necessary, to find proper cycling shoes.

It makes no sense to buy a pair of shoes without first trying them on and walking about a bit. At best, you'll be lucky, at worst you'll cause some sort of injury.

tl;dr Find a place that has shoes in stock. Find a pair that works for you.

I will never buy cycling shoes with laces again. Laces get caught in pedals. Not pretty, for pedals, laces or rider.

The Pearl Izumi X-Alp shoes that the OP pointed to have a Velcro strap that keeps the laces out of the crankset. My wife likes her X-Alp shoes, but I agree- the fit is it.
