now that i *have to* replace my pedals....
i was putting off going clipless for a while, since the platforms were working out.
but now my bike tipped off its wall mount, fell on one of the pedals, bending it and essentially rendering it unusable.
SO, i'd like to get a set of clipless pedals - platform on one side. i need them to be cheap, and shoes.
I'm cool with getting something off ebay if there's something you can recommend.

Performance Forte campus pedal:

Same awesome, cheap pedal.
Don't go cheap with shoes if you can avoid it. I like my specialized tahoe MTB shoe.

I got a pair of Shimano M520 pedals off of eBay for $20, they were almost new. Rode them for 4 years before deciding I didn't care about clipless. Still, I'd check on eBay. It seems to me that SPD is so simple it'd be hard to make a bad SPD pedal, but maybe others here can say whether that's true or not.

Nashbar still has some CB Smarty's floating around.

They've been discontinued by CB, I believe the Candies replaced them.
If you don't care what style of cleat you want or what color they are, Nashbar has these as factory 2nds. I think there ugly as hell, but you can't beat the price.

SPD-compatible is the standard for MTB clipless shoes, so that's a non-issue; CB Candy/Smarty/Eggbeater cleats (that attach to the shoes) are not only interchangeable, but mount to all MTB shoes. The cleats for Shimano 520's will mount to the exact same shoes as the CB's.
I ran 515's for about a year; my daughter has them available to her now, though she prefers platforms. I run Times, and the ATAC cleat also mounts to any MTB shoe.
Just find a pair that A.)fit well, and B.)fit well.
