i want a the hardest saddle i can possibly get. i've been struggling with saddles for five years now, and finally found one i like -- the bare plastic shell of a WTB. unfortunately, it's about done for and i need another one.

suggestions?

One of these should fit the bill.....

There are carbon fiber saddles available. They're damn hard and have no padding.

HIPCHIP 09-02-09 09:56 AM

Some BMX saddles are very small and very hard, so if you can get one that fits, that may be an option too.

Brooks of course.

Part of what makes it comfortable is quite possibly the width... So you should (in my opinion) be seeking a saddle of a specific width, with a preference for hard.

Have you tried an Ebay search with the terms "plastic BMX seat"?
If you know the name brand of your current cinder-block, you might even find an exact replacement for it.
(I don't envy your taint.)

Know any woodworkers who could fix you up with something made from a 2 x 4?

I was thinking the same thought the first time I glanced at the thread. A 2 x 6 or 2 x 8 though for adequate width.

IIRC a lot of the cheap bikes used to come with steel bottom pan saddles too. Totally unyielding though no idea of where to find one today.

I'm just curious about the want for no padding...

is your arse made of marshmallows? :D

StephenH 09-02-09 05:59 PM

I can mail it to you. It came on an Ozone mountain bike. It's like a 2x4, only with padding that doesn't do any good. However, it does have the roundy-post mount, not the fancy road-bike clamp doohickey.

Take the rails from your old saddle and afix them to a block of cocobolo wood. It's pretty dang hard.

a steal at about $500.00

LOL at the Sheldon pic.
Brooks are NOT hard. I fall into them like a sofa.
And my taint is the one demanding the extra hard saddle, to the detriment of my bony butt.

I like that carbon fiber saddle and have looked for bmx saddles. But they're all so narrow.

Zan 09-02-09 09:20 PM

Why do you want a super hard saddle?

Must have good roads 'round where you're at.

Zan 09-02-09 09:22 PM

Wider saddles are usually "comfort" saddles while the narrow ones are race-oriented saddles. Cush is also there for comfort... so you want a comfort saddle with minimal cush?

I like my Serfas Stinger. It's not going to be as hard as a CF saddle, but it prevented any numbies from happenin'.

Actually, the road around here aren't that bad. Basically, I want zero pressure on my taint and i've found hard saddles are the best for that. plus, i'm riding a steel bike with 32's so the vibrations are minimal. as for the wideness, i'm 6'5" with big hips.

Have you tried some of the anatomical saddles with the trough or split down the center intended to prevent pressure on your taint blood vessels. I know my LBS carries several models of various widths.

These anatomical saddles work.

A firm saddle is better than a nice comfy gell filled armchair but it is not necessary to go rock hard. You do want that saddle to mould to your backside. Till that happens- or the butt adjusts a bit you will have butt pain.

I have two saddles - a San Marco "Aero" and a Flite gel max. Both similar shapes and they both fit. Took a bit of setting up though. First of all get the sit bones on the wings of the saddle. Adjust forward and back till you are sitting with the weight on the wings. Then start on the tilt. If you can feel the saddle on the pubic bone- then lower the nose. If you are continually sliding forward then tilt the nose up a bit. For me it was a case of tilting up and down till I got it right- Took about 10 minutes.

I'm a big guy too, and I ride with 32's also...Pasella TG's. I had taint problems like crazy. I even started cutting my own anatomic slots on Brooks B17 saddles way before the Imperial came out.

But then I switched to the B68 and poof...no more problems. For me, that saddle didn't need a cutout. The extra width allowd my wide butt...ahem...I mean sit bones to sit on top of the saddle and raised my taint up enough to eliminate all pain. It's a little wider than the B17, but not like some big easy chair. Didn't slow me down a bit or change my riding position. I highly recommend it.

Even if you don't go with the B68, I have to say, the shape of the saddle will be more important than hardness for resolving your problem.
