Fenders for a Gary Fisher

I have a GF Nirvana (2005 I think) that I'd like to use as a winter bike. I bought some Planet Bike fenders and couldn't get the rear installed. My LBS (a good one) couldn't do it either.

Does anyone have a GF Nirvana that they have installed front and rear fenders on? Brand and pictures if you have them please.

I do have a rear rack installed. Does the rack protect like a fender? I presume that the rack does deflect some of the spray but isn't as efficient as a true fender.

Thanks for your input.

Pics of your rear dropouts and the top of the seat stays would help.
