well used mtn bike. both wheels are cracked a lot. the other day, the rear rim actually blew out. about 2 miles from home. i had to release the brake cable to limp home. today i found a set of wheels for $20 on CL. sweet. only 2 miles from my house too. i brought the old rim with me. turns out the rear wheel had no gear cluster and the guy had the required socket to get the gear cluster off too. nice guy. swapped on my gears and got a new tube and was biking in no time. my old hubs were deore xt and the new ones are just plain old shimano. not sure of the model but they work for me. yes, they are not new but they are affordable.
after reading about folks spending hundreds on new wheels i feel like a putz for finding new rims for 20. but hey, it keeps me rolling which is the goal. my sun chinook rims were 18yrs old. original tires till last year. i was given some used continental t&c tires but only put 1 on the rear. the front wheel/tire/tube is original. still rolls true. i ride alot and my bike is in pretty good shape. i am debating about putting on the new rim/tire on the front. might as well make both wheels match.
Dude, my road bike cost 1/4 of what most of the guys I ride with spent on theirs and 90% of them cough up their left lung trying to keep with me. And I ride with a couple of 19 year olds that regularly kick my ass on bikes that cost half as much as mine. You got wheels, they roll, they are true and you spent $20 buck on them. You win. Period.
