What is so great about Huffy bikes?
 

Is it their superior frame welds? The accurate shifting? The attention to detail? I just don't understand how they can offer so much bike for so few dollars!

I'm too cheap to afford one, so I thought I start a thread questioning their mark-up and whether it's worth the "hype". Then this thread will spiral out of control as the elites who rock Huffys pour icy disdain over the unwashed masses. You're welcome!

My friend had a "White Heat" when we were kids... which we affectionately referred to as "White Heap"

They bastardized "We Will Rock You" by Queen for the TV commercial too, for that they should all be shot.

Older US made Huffys were IMO a bit better than their current bike shaped objects (BSOs). Huffy kept down prices by buying the cheapest components they could find and then negotiated for large quantity buys to get the best price possible. They also had one of the most automated factories making bikes to minimize labor costs.

Now they have found even less expensive components, mostly from Chinese suppliers, and are using Chinese manufacturers to make the bikes using labor that is paid very minimal wages. Amazing how cheap a BSO can be made if you ignore functionality and use the worlds cheapest available components. Eliminating manufacturing QC also helps minimize production cost.

21 years ago Frank Berto reported that some Taiwanese during the original bike boom were turning out "road bikes" for $20 each FOB Taiwan in container lot quantities for export. This price still included a profit margin for the manufacturers and they were still better quality I expect than current Huffy and similar BSOs.

I had my first face plant on a well built huffy back in 1990, I can remember it like it was....... oh wait I can't remember it at all.

I wish I had a pic of my first multispeed bike, and first ATB for that matter, a Huffy Bull Cruiser from, I'd guess, 1982. It's not even on BikePedia, but I just now found it in a thread at ratrodbikes.com:

Even when I was a kid in the '70s we all knew that Huffy was junk. That being said, about 1980 a friend of mine got a brand new Huffy Santa Fe and I was a little envious. Mainly due to the orange and brown color scheme which was the height of fashion during that time.

Somehow I picture all of the bicycles in hell being Huffys, maybe with the bar end streamers attached too.

Only thing great about em is the Under 100 dollar price tag. Most of the frames are built like tanks but everything else sux.

There is an exception. Alex Moulton marketted his bikes in the US through Huffy who added their own stickers to his bikes - most regretably.

i never had a Huffy.
i had an AMF.

I'd be more worried about the cockroaches mutating from the fallout until they're big enough to ride the Huffys.

That looks like the bicycle version of the Honda drop. Except the Hondas earned a reputation for making a quality product.

My first bike was an AMF Roadmaster.

Here it is, rehabbed for my niece, and still with my own parts on it. White-taped apehanger bars swapped to BMX bars and mushroom grips, flame yellow-to-red banana seat to what I thought was a BMX-style seat, and plastic pedals for rubber n' metal ones. During its lifetime, it also had a chainguard, cable-driven speedometer, a battery-operated siren horn, fluorescent spoke covers, and maybe a couple other trinkets.

I replaced more rear tires than tubes because I had so much fun skidding to a stop. :thumb:
