Rigid fork for mtb

I read a thread on here about going to your lbs and see what they have laying around that you could get a deal on. So, I go to my lbs and ask. The guy working the counter, who i used to go to school with says "yah we got some old forks layin around that will fit your bike". He brings out a couple of road forks! I had to explain to him the difference. The funny thing is, the city I live in isn't small by any means, but we have smalltown knowledge I guess. The closest "real" bike shop around is 90 miles away! I want to give business to local businesses so, i'm heading to columbus in a couple of weeks.
