Need help on buying Giant FCR '09

Hi everyone. I am pretty new here.

I posted a thread on the hybrid section but I was not sure if it's the right place.

    Here is the link.

I am just mixed up on buying a new bike and really need your help.

Here is a resume of what I posted.

I just bought this weekend a Giant FCR2 '09 bike. I want to get back to riding and think this might be a good bike (I was wondering between this one and the Giant Defy3). I have not picked up the bike at the shop yet and I could still change my mind.

I will be using this bike to ride about 10-15km to and 10-15km back.

I have bought a Small frame (that's what the guy suggested) but I have found out that this if for 5'2 to 5'6 and I am 5'8 (they do have the Medium size in stock). Is small the right size?

So probably medium would be better. But if I like to have more seat post and a smaller frame, would it be bad to take the small size even though Giant says 5'2 to 5'6 and I'm 5'8 (30'' inseam). I am just asking so I make the best decision. I have a Large mountain bike and never asked any questions and I am now stuck with a bike that I don't like.

The guy suggested the small but is he really qualified (I don't know). Once place tells me medium, another says small. I'm just mixed up. The guys who said small just looked at me, took the bike out, asked me to stand over it and said, small is good for you. Is there more to fitting that just that?

    Thanks for all your help.

From a very mixed up guy.

    Chris.

    Small is a 54.5cm toptube. M is a 56.5m. I'm 5'9" I'd be riding a small, as I ride a 54-55cm top tube and have a 1" longer inseam than you. Looking at numbers and knowing my sizing I'd say you're a S.

Standover is 30.3 versus 31.5 on the two bikes also.

Thanks for the info. I'll take that into consideration.

Ride them both obviously, and don't buy until you can. Judging by the published geometries looks like Giants's sizing is off a touch. I'd expect a M to be at around 5'10" with that kind of top tube length. I'd be curious from Giant owners if they've found that the sizing indeed runs a tad odd.

    Giant Sizing

I am 5'6" short and an inseam of 30" I fall just between the XS and S sizing in Giant. First one I got was an OCR3 in XS- that is too small for me. Next bike was a S and this was a TCR. Fits perfectly- in fact as good as my conventional 51CM.

Now the odd thing. The TCR is an S frame- but I had a good deal on an FCR 1 frame that was built up into a Road bike. That is an M. Fits perfectly but I did change the stem to one that was slightly shorter.

But My Son-in-Law who is 5'10" and 33" inseam (The reason the FCR was bought so he would not keep borrowing my bikes)- Prefers the S frame to the M. So he still rides my TCR while I ride the 51Cm.

So the S frame in Giant sizing will fit from 30" inseam to 33"- and that is only to my knowledge. Height does not come into it. That is dependant on the top tube length. So Try the two sizes out. The Legs can be adjusted by the Seat height. Top tube length is fixed and although you can change the stem- it is not easily adjustable. See if a test ride is possible on the two frames. If that is not possible- just sit on the frames in the shop. That will tell you which would be a better fit- just by the stretch.

Attachments are of the TCR and the OCR. Both fit me but the S frame is less cramped and I can ride it easier. And seat Posts on Giant are fairly long.

I know these are road bikes and you are talking the FCR but the sizing rules still apply.

Edit--- If you are riding on the road- You might be happier with a road bike. The FCR is a good bike and ideal for smooth trails and road but if You are mainly riding road- then a road bike is generraly more efficient and comfortable. That is just my Experience and I also ride Mountain bikes. They are even worse on the roads.
