Bike Basket for a Furry Friend

This may sound ridiculous and I am aware that nice walk on a trail is much better for my dogs. However there are days where I would much rather ride and not feel guilty that I have left a furry companion at home. My smallest dog is a mini dachshund and is about 12 lbs. I'm researching into getting a basket but I'm concerned about the safety of these things. I have 2 bikes and it would be nice if I could easily transfer the basket between my Cannondale F300 and Trek 7200. Any suggestions?

I've seen them in e-bay stores. You needn't bid or be an e-bay type to at least see them. Besides, many of the stores sell outside the e-bay realm. I see no reaon to think that they're un-safe. I haven't used 'em. The terrier dog, seven pounder is too misbaved. I fear confrontations with other dogs more than that though.

e-bay's down now.. ?? Oh well just try www.jensonusa.com click "basket" in the up-lft-hand search box, a bunch will pop-up. Call them, they'll help you decide. Wicker, metal.....

Basil makes some nice ones, the trick is going to be find someone that stocks or can get them. I would give Clever Cycles a call they have a lot of things in the store that are not on the website, or they may be able to source one for you.

Last summer I saw several where they just had a shallow wire front basket with plywood and carpet on the bottom of the basket.

Nashbar kiddie cart, as good as any pet specific trailer and only $100. We haul our mini schnauzers in one. The female is 10 lbs, the male 20 but he usually runs.

Schnauser's are wonderfull. Stands to reason that they behave reasonably in the cart. Yorky...not sure.

The male doesn't behave so well actually...that's why he has to run.

Cats never fully relax in a basket, no matter how much duct tape you use...
Actually I've seen this done several times, too. We have a big homeless population here, and a surprising number of them get around on bikes with dogs in a basket or sometimes just on a rear rack with their forelegs on the riders' shoulders. Good trick--I'd like to teach my dog to do it.
For the first few rides, and maybe permanently, how about a standard basket in front with something on the bottom to keep the critter from poking through to the spokes, then zip tie an inverted basket over the top to make a jumpout-proof cage? You could zip one edge to make a hinge and use a twist tie or shoelace or secure the opposite end. I'd try that myself, but our smaller dog weighs about 30 pounds.

HERE are a couple options. I like the second one better.
