Yo (Philly speak),

I'm looking to get a second 26" set of wheels for my 80's Trek 800 MB. I'd like to leave the Nokian studs on the old wheels and have a second set to easily put on for a trail ride or when the weather gets warmer. I found a nice trail near my house to take some rides on the weekends and would like to avoid peeling off the studs and swapping 2 sets of tires all of the time.

Do you'se guys (more Philly speak) have any suggestions for a fairly inexpensive set of wheels? Where to look online?

www.craigslist.org would be my first stop. If nothing is listed post a "wanted" thread there. Also bikepartsusa.com has some cheap 26" wheels if you can true and tension them yourself.

Hey I have a set of MAVIC 221'S sitting around that I would be willing to part with. They are off a 1998 Stumpjumper and are in good shape as far as I can see. They haven't been used since 2002 or 2003. Let me know if interested at philoanna@verizon.net

I've got a spare 26" wheelset that I'd be willing to part with. It's got mix and match hubs and I don't even know what the rims (Schrader drilled) are. 32 spoke straight 14 gauge DT spokes built by me. Right now they've got some 1.5" Specialized tires mounted on them that I'd throw in. I've even got the right trapazoid boxes for shipping. I'd think they're worth $100.00 for the pair if you're interested.

OM wheels are not the best around so I would look for a decent set of wheels to use for most of your riding. I favour XT hubs mated to Mavic rims as a good wheel.

I have 3 sets of wheels for the MTB. One set with mud tyres on- XTR hubs with Mavic 117 rims. One set I use for most rides- Mavic crossrides with Panaracer Fire XC's and the OM wheels with the any old tyre on for the the wet offroad rides where the wheels might get damaged.

On the road bikes I use a cheap set for winter where the rims will get worn away and the Good set I use when the weather is fine or for long rides.

Thanks for the replies. I left a message with my LBS, but I need to give them a call back to see what they found and at what cost.

I'm not looking for anything fancy, just a spare set to change in a couple of minutes when I want to play in the dirt. My current set up has a 7 speed cassette.

is your 7 speed a cassette or a thread-on free hub?

I just bought a new rear from my LBS, nothing fancy... 26" 36 spoke with quick release skewer, it was $65, included rim tape if that counts for anything.

jensonusa.com has (had?) one for $35, front or rear. certainly cant expect anything to be of the utmost quality at that price but for some mild riding, how bad can it be?

another edit: those rear rims are for cassette hubs, i dont suppose that matters much if you can find a 7 speed cassette of your liking... not sure how easy it is to switch between 7 and 8 without adjusting your derailler but thats another option, if it doesnt require any adjustments, you can get a decent 8 speed for ~30 bucks.
