Unbelievable

I have cycled the M7 cycle path (Sydney) at least twice a week for the past five years, what I saw this morning I could not believe.I saw this guy having a cigarette while having a break from riding his bike.It defeats the purpose doesn't it.

Why?
He enjoyed two things simultaneously, a cigarette and a bike ride...

Better to smoke while on a bike ride than to be smoking without exercise .

Believe it or not, a little over a hundred years ago smoking was recommended for people with lung problems. True, its in old medical books.
Theres quite a few fairly famous sports folks that smoke. I cant remember names, but one is a runner and another(italian guy) plays soccer(football). I actually ran for years and smoked, had to quit running due to hip problem(old age) and thank God finally managed to quit smoking.
I was going to joke and say whats unbelievable, that he was resting or that he was smoking?

When I was in the service, I went back and forth between smoking and not.

I noticed that they years I smoked, i was faster in the required 2-mile run than in the non-smoking years!

Nevertheless, I quit 8 years ago, and still despise the smell of the foul things.

I've also seen it, almost every year; some drunkard in ragged jean jacket and ripped khakis, rolling an old 10-speed rustpile with 2 working gears, and steady sucking on that cigarette while they ride at about 7 mph. That, or an immigrant restaurant worker on his way to/from the job, riding a Wally Special, again about 7 mph, puffing away -- at least they're dressed better! (Anyone who thinks I'm profiling, realize that I'm going by evidence of my eyes.)

Oh yeah, I've seen riders smoking on organized rides during breaks.

I Scuba dove for years & we were always told by the instructor, that smoking was the worst thing you could do , if you were a diver. During breaks , the instructor lit up !!! DUH !

When I was in the service, one of my instructors smoked WHILE he ran. And he ran like a deer -- faster than anyone in the company! Really p**ssed a lot of us off!

I love this poster. when I was a teen one of the 'oldguys' in the local bike club (family oriented not racing) actually hada cigareette lighter (from a car) mounted on his handlebars. he would engage the bottle generator lift the back wheel and give it a good spin... and then light his cigarette

I've been smoking since I was 18 (33 years young now). I took up cycling in 2007. Never had a problem doing long distance or climbing hills. And what would I do during breaks? Smoke of course.

Eddy Merckx said what he missed most about the Tour was not being able to smoke for 3 weeks (although I believe he was sponsored by Gitane so it could have been a marketting ploy) and Battagli smoked. Not mutually exclusive.
