Help in Naming a Cycling Club

Hey Fellow Cyclists!
I am working on a team forming a cycling club for weight loss surgery patients. The goal of this club is to encourage people to have an active lifestyle through cycling. We are targeting bariatric surgery patients, family members and friends. These folks have had RNY and Lapband gastric surgery. The name we are looking for somehow needs to incorporate weight loss. WLS is the abbreviation for weight loss surgery. It seems close to wheels but we can't come up with a connection. Some other things to know is that the group will mostly cycle trails and not the road. It's Ohio based, Northeast Ohio specifically. Hoping some creative folks are out here to help us find a catchy clever name.

Identity is the name of the game here. Leaving the old self and becoming the new.

Etymology

The word "metamorphosis" derives from Greek μεταμόρφωσις, "transformation, transforming"[1], from μετα- (meta-), "change" + μορφή (morphe) "form"[2].

It would be great if I could be more creative and figure how to incorporate metamorphosis into the name.

I agree. We meet tonight and are going to discuss OWLS and how it can fit into the change in lifestyle and activity level. It's an interesting twist on a cycling club: part cycling club but with a lot of support group and self development thrown in. We expect most people to be novices looking as this as an exercise option. We have already identified a key component is to offer rides that are short enough for beginners that then have an add-on component for those more experienced. I think the discussion will lead us to talking to a local cycling club and see how we fit into their rides. This seems to be a good idea to give people who have developed their self enough on our rides to go on road rides with more experienced cyclists. It is all about developing oneself and one's self image. So, we'll see how clever we are in getting that transformative nature in the group's name. -- Tom

Here's an update: Our committee met and looked at names. They chose "Spinning Off". They liked the idea off spinning off weight through cycling. I think it will be appended with Bicycle Club or Cyclists on the end and a tag line saying something about spinning off weight through cycling. A group of creative folks is going to work on it some more. -- Tom

The guidelines seemed to imply having to use WLS. I vote for OWLS.

That's a shame. I guess I'm too late, but as a branding professional I'd have got your creatives to come up with some ideas and then consult with the patients themselves. A good name can make all the difference to whether people want to be associated with a project. Although an owl is a creature of the night and not wholly appropriate (that is if you want to think too hard about it), I think I'd rather be an 'Ohio Owl' (nice and alliterative), than a 'Spinning Off... er, something' - just doesn't work does it? If it's not too late maybe your creative bods could work on it.

Good luck anyway - it's a great project.

(Sorry if it sounds like I'm undermining your efforts.)

Owls in mythology is quite amazing. While there are many variations, one from Native Americans associated the meaning of owl with wisdom, foresight, and keeper of sacred knowledge.

And you could use the Spedis Owl Petroglyph

EDIT: Forgot....Owls is out....Spinning Off is in!!
