explained that I have been riding for 10 months after 27 years of fairly hard living (ie. drinking, smoking 1 pack a day, eating horribly, no exercise). He explained to me that it just takes time to overcome all that damage I did to my body. Just keep riding and things will get better, weight and conditioning wise.

I do ride with clipless pedals.
Because of this thread I have shifted my midweek training specifically toward technique. I think it is going to make a lot of difference, thanks for the feedback everyone.

In addition to all the excellent advice offered so far: when you're with the group on those 70-mile rides, work your way to the front on the flats and slowly slide back through the group on the climbs. Pushing just a little less hard on each climb has more of a cumulative restorative effect than you'd think it would.
