Are you addicted to Bike Forums?

Just curious. I for one like it here, but I wouldn't consider myself an addict.

My back issues mess with my sleeping so I often find myself up at odd hours.

If I rode as much as I read, I'd be racing on tv.

Not addicted to BF but I spend sometime here reading and getting ideas and spend time on CGOAB reading journals mostly the Southern Tier Route. I'd say 1/4 of the time on the PC I drop by the BF for the 50's, hybrid, folding bikes, touring and general cycling forums. The rest of the time, it's on Yahoo, Newsvine and e bay.

The thought has crossed my mind.

I am fairly new to BF. I am not really sure how I discovered it in the first place but I'm really glad I did.

I was exploring some of the sub-forums and ran across the news and announcements and was reading with great amusement the users that had been banned and why and for how long. Then I read about people that ask for voluntary banishment so they can get some work done. This made me sit up and take stock of my own usage of the forum. Yes I was in the middle of a fairly important work project and yes I found myself on BF instead of doing work against my looming deadline. I actually thought about posting a thread similar to this but I realized I would spend even more time reading responses to my thread than getting my work done.

I did reflect on the attraction that BF holds for me. I have ridden a bike for over fifty years and for the last forty in a virtual social vacuum. When we got our driver license most of my peers quit riding their bikes. Period. A lot of my friends were given cars by their parents or inherited them from older siblings but my parents made me (and I thank them for this now) work for and buy my cars. So I continued to use my bike as transportation to work and school. And for enjoyment. My parents chipped in some money on my seventeenth birthday to help me buy my first real nice road bike and there were a few guys that I rode with and raced with but college soon broke my connection with that group. As an adult I came and went in terms of my bike riding. I moved around a fair amount and I would ride when the spirit moved me. I really got back into riding a little over twenty years ago and found it to be a very solitary activity. Rare was the occasion I would find a riding buddy or even someone that shared my interest in the sport. The American South is not exactly filled with avid cyclists. When you say bike down here it has a motor. And if it isn't football it's not a serious sport. Even baseball and basketball are viewed as kind of sissy. So the idea of sweaty, skinny spandex clad guys on painful looking bikes is viewed right there with communism and sexual perversion. In some work and social situations I don't talk about my riding habits because it just doesn't win me any respect. Just the opposite.

So I stumble across BF and suddenly I've got a whole community of somewhat like minded people. I have felt like a person lost in a desert must feel like when they find an oasis. Or an orphan finding a family.

I think I am reaching a level of moderation in my BF usage. I look forward to staying in the community that BF represents and using it without it interfering in my work, home and riding life. But if it comes to it I'm not too stubborn to request a temporary banishment.

I stumbled across BF when I'd run out of material on my regular biking forums. BF has about a trillion times the volume of those sites combined. I find it hard to keep up with all the new posts! Every time I click the "new posts" button, I just know it's going to cost me at least an hour of my life. But I just can't stop myself. That's addiction, right?

I don't know, probably not.

I have been a member here for a long time. I was a member of Roadbikereview for about the same time. I think I was addicted to RBR, no question.

I was recently chased off of RBR. I am trying very hard not to get "addicted" to the same extent here, but it is a funny thing.

I like reading about bikes, and cycling and what not and I find myself coming here more and more just to "check in"

I am trying to keep it under control, I know how many hours of my life I wasted at RBR - I don't want to do that again, and yet ..............

My addiction may not be as advanced as some here, so it looks like I have my work cut out for me, or maybe its just that I should cut out from work.

I actually learn useful information, either on new products or obscure tools/procedures that I otherwise would not have heard of.

I learned a lot of useful stuff here in a very short time. I'm also active on other forums, mainly computer and photography related. Since I don't watch the TV (ugh...) and hardly watch any movies, I have a lot more internet time than other folks. I wouldn't call this an addiction, it's more of a lifestyle. Some people are glued to their TVs for hours each day and no one calls that an addiction.

Oh, also, for me signing up on the BikeForums coincided with my increased interest in cycling - was building my first DYI bike - and particularly commuting to work in any weather conditions. My interests have shifted from computers to biking a bit more recently. I also stopped playing computer games as my new years resolution.
