am i bush league (first bike race)
so i am going to enter in my first bike race in march. I will be in the citizens/beginner category. I am new to cycling and want to learn as much as i can. However, i don't have all of the gear... i.e. cycling jersey, bibs etc. I basically tool my bike around with a tee-shirt and pants with my bike shorts under them (it's below freezing still, and will likely be 30's - 40's in march still).
are people going to be annoyed or not take me seriously? Should i scrape up for some $$ to buy more gear? i usually ride with a helmet and ski goggles and booties over my bike shoes in this cold weather.
fyi, the race is www.barry-roubaix.com

My guess, not having been there: If it has a beginner/citizen category and doesn't require a license, nobody's going to care what you wear. They're not going to take you (or anyone else in the citizen/beginner category) seriously, but then again, if you showed up with $5,000 worth of bike and gear, they still wouldn't take you serioiusly, so don't sweat it. (Lots of people have more money than they do fitness or skill). Go ride, have fun, do good. If the cat 1-2-3 races are run at a separate time from the citz/beginner race, try to schedule to watch some of them and see what they look like (in terms of speed, not fashion).
Look in the Road Cycling, in the Racing subforum, and there's some very informative posts on racing in general, some of which won't apply to this event.

They won't take you seriously but it won't matter. If you can stay with the group and not get in anyone's way they will forget anything about what you are wearing/riding. If you can't stay with them, they probably won't remember you at all

and if you do get in their way, they will remember you, but not in a good way.
Get yourself out on some group rides to develop your pack riding skills.

most group rides here end when the threat of snow and sleet ends... april-may. I am hoping to hook up with a buddy who lives about 90 min away to get a sort of group ride with him and some of his friends up north of here (where there is more snow lol)
