Cycling and my Statistics Project

Hello everyone

I'm a collegiate cyclist who is doing a statistics project and I need to collect some data. Here is what I need: the average speed that you can sustain on a flat stretch of road for about a mile or so, and the diameter of your mid-thigh (midpoint between your knee and hip). It would be such a huge help is you can provide me with this data.

Thanks,
Pete

When I was in college and since in real life - "collect some data" - meant you actually did that.
Not ask a bunch of people on line for the info.

Bikes: I never learned to ride a bike. It is my deepest shame.

Explain the difference and why his method will result in a less representative sample.

To the OP:
Thigh diameter is a tricky subject because thighs are not (well, mine at least are not) round... I included a circumfrence. You can easily estimate average diameter if you like.

Me:
Avg speed over 1.6 km: 45km/h
Thigh circumfrence: 685mm

What kind of weather are we experiencing on this flat stretch of road? Have we ridden a 200 km brevet the day before and are tired? Or is this the first ride we've done in a month and are out of practice? Or are we in shape and well rested? What kind of bicycle are we riding? Are we on heavy mountain bikes or light titanium bicycles? Or are we riding recumbents or unicycles? Is the road surface freshly paved with smooth pavement? Or is it paved in chipseal? Or full of potholes? How old are we? Are we all 20 year old college kids? Or are we middle aged? Or are we retired? Are we male? Or female?

I'm presuming that you're trying to make a correlation between thigh size and average speed, but there are so many other factors involved. If you want any sort of accuracy, you've got to narrow things down a lot. But I hope I'm not telling you anything new ... I hope your instructor has told you the same thing. Go back and check your notes.
