Flattering Bike Shorts

I have just start back cycling after many ! Years away. I have a low-end pair of bike shorts and a mid-range pair. My wife and daughter say bike shorts are disgusting as man marbles can be pronounced. Are higher end shorts more flattering?

"Flattering" and "bike shorts" cannot be used in the same sentence.

What brand shorts do you have? Are they too small or too tight? Correctly fitting bike shorts usually don't produce "man marbles".
www.velowear.com has reasonably priced shorts and bibs that fit correctly.
Now everyone else can offer their 2 cents.

It does sound, from your graphic description, as if you're shorts are perhaps too tight. I don't know if high-end shorts are any less... revealing, but if you spend much time in the saddle they are well worth the investment. I am very happy with my Sugoi "RS" cycling shorts (I use XL and my Levi's are a 38" waist).

Look for non-form-fitting shorts like the ones Limey linked. They're sometimes called mountain biking shorts. Not only do they look less silly, they typically have pockets!

I just buy a pair of Target athletic shorts and wear over the bike shorts. Works pretty well. I haven't lost my marbles yet!!!

Flatter does not go with bike shorts, just like flattering doesn't go with helmet. My sig used to read "The general public's acceptance of Lycra bicycle shorts decrease exponentially every yard or meter away from a bicycle."

You can buy some cheap athletic shorts and wear over the bike shorts and still get the benefit of the bike shorts.

Come on. We are male, and we have marbles...or eggs... or grapefruits...or whatever. Shorts will reveal to some degree what we have, although from my perspective they tend to hide things more than reveal them. Yes, they are tight, and therefore reveal more than wind pants. But it is okay to be who we are. I say wear them with pride.

Why not just buy baggy-style biking shorts?

I'm thinking your current shorts are made out of too thin a material, or are too old and the fabric has lost it's ability to, "restrain things"

I'll put in another vote for Velowear's shorts, well made, price is reasonable, and if flexible on color, you can often get a bargain.

Thats what I do... well mine are nylon "hiking" style shorts, very thin ripstop nylon. Being a clyde, I dont really wanna show my figure to the world, so baggy rules. My ex girlfriend had a fit when I bought a pair of bike shorts years ago. I used to be against them, then I tried them...WHOA! Best thing I have done for cycling...

Also wearing baggy over them leaves me looking like just a recreational cyclist, and tends to lessen the road rage cagers will have towards me. Or at least thats how I feel.

Helmets dont really look cool either, but I scrambled my brain once from a cycling mishap. My buddy and I got our front wheels tangled up and we both endoed and blacked out for a few moments. On pavement. There was no residual pain from it but I wished I had a helmet on...

The OP already has bike shorts, no need to spend more money on baggy style shorts for $45-$150 when you can buy gym shorts for $10. It is called a common sense recommendation.

Just put on any shorts and start riding.
After sufficient miles you'll be as exquisite as me. No more hiding.

Stick an Idaho potato in the front of your shorts and nobody will notice the man marbles.

At least with my shorts, the chamois is better placed and thicker in the high end ones ($80 or more a pair). I have some cheap ones I was given as a gift (guessing about $30 or less) that are not suitable for public viewing; I use them on my indoor trainer only... and I'll probably just toss them, since they seem utterly useless.
