Why are they called clipless?

Does anybody know why they call them clipless pedals when you clip into them. And the strap kind are called toe clips but they don't have clips. Is this one of those drive on the parkway, park on the driveway things?

The older style the part that went over the front of the shoe was (is) called the toe clip. And then of course those type also have a strap, which you tighten to hold your shoe in once you foot is in place.

You no longer have the "clip" over your toe, so clipless.

Or they'll come up with a new system called cleatless pedals.

Because they don't have clips. They have cleats. You click or snap into them.

Leonard Zinn, in Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Repair, calls them clip-in pedals.
