Have a great day!

I don't think that acronym originated with cyclists.

But, umm..., what does it mean? A shared path for cyclists and pedestrians, or are there other users as well? Is it a legal class of paths where specific traffic rules apply, or just a generic term?

MUP = Multiple Use Math

Vehicles allowed on a MUP:
1. Road bike
2. Mountain bike
3. BMX bike
4. Cruiser bike
5. Skateboard - short
6. Skateboard - long
7. Rollerskate - standard
8. Rollerskate - inline, 4 wheel
9. Rollerskate - inline, 5 wheel
10. Skooter, small wheel
11. Skooter, large wheel

An NMUP is a "Non Multi Use Path". A handbook is available from your local courthouse with more details on specific NMUPs in your area. Using a prohibited vehicle on a NMUP may result in fines, or even jail time up to 2 years.

I think this is probably right. I first encountered MUP and MUT (multi-use trail) in the '70s when I was a newspaper reporter doing stories about a city project to clean up our river and build paths along the banks. People kept calling them "bike paths,"and the city engineers were adamant that they were for everyone. Whenever we used "bike path" in a story, they'd call and remind us to say "multi-use."
